Partner Spotlight: Gemini
University of Notre Dame Stadium | Notre Dame, Indiana
The Campus Crossroads Addition and Stadium Renovation was the largest single project Notre Dame had undertaken in 175 years, and the goal went beyond adding space. The design team wanted fans to feel the 1930s Rockne era as they moved through the stadium, which meant signage that could carry history without looking dated.
Chicago-based Cardosi Kiper Design Group led the placemaking and wayfinding phase, partnering with 12 fabrication firms and Gemini to bring the concept to life across more than 4,000 signs and 750 thematic graphic elements. A modernized version of the Statendam typeface set the tone, executed in cast bronze and aluminum letters, fabricated and flat cut metal, and precision tooled bronze plaques.
The details show the range. At the Celebration Entrance, custom 5 inch cast letters with a 30 degree angled face project down toward viewers below, spelling out the University's five core pillars. At the student gates, 10 inch cast prismatic letters finished in gold leaf match the famous Golden Dome. In the accolades area, precision tooled plaques reproduce letter strokes as small as a quarter inch, chosen over cast plaques for a living display that adds new honorees year after year.
