Remember in that Keanu Reeves football movie, “The Replacements”? How he plays Shane Falco, a QB with all the talent and potential in the world until his infamous performance on the biggest stage in college football, and that’s what defined him for the majority of his adult life? And that one scene where he talks about fearing quicksand, and how he says you make one mistake s as nd it’s like stepping into quicksand, and the more you try to fight it, the quicker you sink?

I thought about that watching Ilia Malinin’s free skate today. The weight of the world in his shoulders, being expected to be great on his sport’s biggest stage - the Winter Olympics - and it was on this day, this one performance, where he fell, literally and figuratively, flat on his ass. You could tell he tried to fight the quicksand after his first mistake - but by then, it was too late.

First and foremost, I feel for the young man. The weight of that failure would crush most people. And he somehow still took it like a champ. I just hope that whatever lessons he can take from the wreckage of that performance, he takes with him into the future, and he’ll be all the better for it if or when he decides to skate again. And if he chooses to go for gold in Salt Lake in 2030, he will not only be ready for anything, he will conquer the demons of Milan - much like Falco conquered his demons in “The Replacements”.
