Grateful to have met some wonderful artists throughout the exhibition. Thank you to George Billis for including my work in the show.

Color Swatches

Thank you Fairfield University Art Museum for your vision and including in the exhibition color swatches of research that have accompanied my painting practice since 2012. I first heard of Munsell from my husband Ira who while a student at Cooper Union learned about Munsell. The idea of learning ways to reduce chroma was something I was interested in. During a residency at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in 2009, I came upon a small book tucked away on a shelf "A Color Notation" by Munsell and it piqued my curiosity. The book interested me, and in the summer of 2012 I was delighted to have the opportunity to take a workshop with Graydon Parrish and Douglas Flynt, at the Grand Central Academy in which we learned about the color theories of of Albert H. Munsell. Since 2012 I have been charting pigments based on Hue, Value and Chroma. I am grateful for the collaborative nature of this exhibit and for the questions asked in preparation for the exhibition and essay. Through this process I have learned that my research on color is parallel to the paintings I am making but don't always intersect in a direct way. For example in the vitrine, the swatch middle right, was in preparation for the painting "Porch". The other swatches experimental studies about color.

Photograph 1: Swatches inside the vitrine in the current exhibition "Suzanne Chamlin: Studies in Color", Bellarmine Hall Galleries, Fairfield University Art Museum. From back to front. The spectrum that looks like keys are all of the pigments I charted on Munsell. The pages with circles were the first swatches I made of all of the pigments I had. The pages with squares are ideas for different palettes. Lower left corner, studies of yellows with blues to create greens, possible color for grass throughout the seasons.

Photograph 2: Taken the evening of the Opening Reception on April 4, thank you to the Fairfield University Photography team. Bellarmine Hall Galleries are closed this week due to construction and the July 4th holiday and will re-open on Tuesday, July 9. Gallery hours 11am-4pm Tuesday - Saturday, and Thursdays 11am-8pm.
The exhibit will be up until July 27, 2024.
Thank you.
