“The Nutcracker” from bust, to a “must see” holiday tradition

“Listen for the incredible variety of orchestral color in this music, whether high and shimmery, deep and rich, or dark and dramatic; soak up the rich beauty and variety of the tunes and the rhythmic energy of the music,” said Christopher Zimmerman, conductor and music director of Fairfax Symphony Orchestra. “Whether you have heard it once or a thousand times, the sheer wonder of Tchaikovsky’s music never ceases to captivate the listener.”

Today, “The Nutcracker” is a Christmas staple, but that was not always the case. In 1940, the Disney movie “Fantasia” used clips from the ballet score. The film’s narrator said

We remember Maestro Hudson for his great achievements.

We honor his legacy in each note we play...and through our innovative education programs... as we continue after 65 years to serve thousands of people each year in our community and our schools.

Cameron Schutza - Tenor joined the Fairfax Symphony last night as a soloist for an epic season finale: Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

Beethoven crafted his famous "Ode to Joy" work in an epic struggle between despair and transcendence to reach new heights with the words “all men become brothers.” His glorious final symphony celebrates the bonds that unite humankind and has been described as his “great vision of the future.”

Fairfax Symphony
The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra (FSO) launched its 2021-2022 season at the stunning new Capital One Hall, featuring internationally acclaimed cellist Amit Peled. Led by Maestro Christopher Zimmerman, this is the Symphony's first performance since the pandemic began. The orchestra commenced with Leonard Bernstein's Three Dance Episodes from "On the Town," a musical that has won multiple Tony Awards since its Broadway debut in 1944, and followed with Bernstein's "Take Care of this House."

Guest cellist Amit Peled gave a dramatic and riveting performance of French composer Sait-Saens' Cello Concerto No. 1, widely considered to be one of the best cello concertos of all time. The beauty of the piece allows the solo instrument to hit all registers, highlighting it even amidst an entire orchestra. As such, Peled commanded a strong musical presence with great energy and expressiveness on his cello.

This is Peled's fourth collaboration with the FSO. "Playing with the Fairfax Symphony has always been special... it truly felt like coming home. Moreover, the ability to create live music with my friends and colleagues in such difficult times in our world was truly meaningful," remarked the cellist. "The new Capital One Hall is a magnificent cultural center addition to the D.C. area. A beauty and an artistic wonder, it will surely be a home for many magical, musical moments," said Peled.

With fanfare, the Symphony closed its debut with Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, esteemed by the composer himself as "one of his best works." The famous second movement, Allegretto, has often been used in pop culture during climactic moments -- including Hollywood films "The King's Speech" and "X-Men: Apocalypse."

"This is the very first concert by a Fairfax County Arts Organization (ArtsFairfax) and the FSO is honored to be the first one to debut there,” said Jonathan Kerr, executive director of the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra.

As for the future, the FSO is optimistic in returning to perform at the newly opened concert hall, said Kerr. "Certainly as we are slowly coming out of the pandemic with concerts reopening and having an opportunity to do that… we have fewer events this year, but we hope for next year as things continue to improve, that we’ll have many more."
Saint Saens last night with the wonderful Fairfax Symphony at the new glorious Capital One Hall Special to perform this concerto on the composer’s birthday!!! Next stop is Dvorak concerto with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and Jose Luis Gomez
