TEDxMarin is mourning the loss of our dear friend and Advisory Board Member Jo Streit. Jo, who lived in Mill Valley and was a regular both at our public TEDx events and in our behind-the-scenes planning and production sessions for many years, recently passed from cancer at the age of 57.
Jo’s keen intellectual curiosity and dedication to sharing people’s authentic stories were hallmarks of her career in documentary filmmaking and also qualities that she carried into each of our events, board meetings, and gatherings. With her experience as a storyteller, journalist and film producer, Jo made many valuable contributions to our community - she encouraged us to pursue transformative, meaningful topics for our stage, gave thoughtful background and insight on speaker subjects and presentations, and patiently coached our team in camera work - especially as we moved to producing prerecorded TEDxMarin video events amid COVID.
But even more than the things she did, it was the way in which she did them that will always be remembered and continue to inspire us. Jo’s effervescence, dedication, patience, generosity, sharp-mindedness and kind-heartedness, her gentle laughter, and her advocacy for even those with the softest voices to speak up, helped our events strive to embody the same values she was known for. Losing Jo has hit our TEDx community hard, but the impact her spirit made on us will live in our hearts.
For those wishing to make an offering in her memory, in lieu of flowers, please consider a tax-deductible donation to support the Jo Streit Archive at the University of North Texas Libraries. All funding received will be used for the preservation and digitization of Jo's “Flirting with Power” film archive and will ensure free access to digitized archival footage.
