UAF Student Drama Association

UAF Student Drama Association A student run university organization dedicated to the supporting and producing of theatre for the education and entertainment of the Fairbanks community.

The SDA is university-sponsored student club, dedicated to all things theatre. We act as a nexus for theatrical productions put on by students at UAF, and meet every Tuesday from 1:05 to 1:50 in the Theatre Department green room (the first door off the graffiti hallway, down the stairs from the Great Hall). We have our fingers in all sorts of theatrical pies: from full-fledged productions to play

readings and improv. Opportunities are made available to students interested in play writing, directing, stage managing, designing/building, acting, crewing, and producing. A few of our traditional and new programs are listed below. WINTER SHORTS: is a series of short plays, sometimes accompanied by improv, that usually show for two weekends during one of the colder months. Designed to help keep the Fairbanks community from succumbing to cabin fever, Winter Shorts is here to entertain audiences with some well-chosen plays, and ensnare Theatre students in a well-rounded working environment (costume, light, and set designers, for instance, aren’t always utilized in a big way in other SDA productions, but play a big part in WS). PLAY-IN-A-DAY: plays are completely written and produced over the course of 24 hours. The first half of the 24 hours is given over to writers, and the next half to actors and directors, all while producers, managers, and various crew make sure props are found, technical elements are squared away, playbills are written, and everyone is generally taken care of. The day of work culminates in a performance. IMPROV: put on by a branch of the SDA, the Ground Squirrel Improv Troupe. Depending on interest from semester to semester, Ground Squirrel meets anywhere from once a week to once a month for improv games. When attendance and interest are high, they also perform at various events. The SDA is available to any student who wants to work on plays in any capacity, and we are very open to helping people put on theatrical events on campus.

Our Tuesday meeting is being held remotely this week! Most of our members are traveling for URTA (grad school auditions/interviews) and I am waiting for gallbladder surgery. There won't be anyone in the green room, but if you want to attend the chat meeting, just let me know! We will be selecting Famous For Fifteen scripts and discussing spring auditions.

ETA: I created a slack account for SDA, join here! https://uafstudentdra-5ox7919.slack.com/
