WILD SHORE SEASON THIRTEEN ANNOUNCEMENT
We are thrilled to announce our THIRTEENTH season, centered on Indigenous and Alaskan voices and built through interdisciplinary collaboration, improvisation, and chamber music.
Our mainstage program brings together Alaskan singer-songwriters, musicians, and filmmakers for a multidisciplinary work in three parts. It opens with Ahtna Athabascan and Iñupiaq songwriter Quinn Christopherson, winner of NPR's 2019 Tiny Desk Concert, who reimagines his songs for chamber ensemble and co-creates a new work with our players. From there, we pair live music with experimental film by Alaskan filmmaker Michael Walsh, including his 35mm silent film Braking Breath and a re-edited mashup of rescued 1970s educational films from Alaskan schools, recast for a 21st-century audience. Composer Matt Evans has reinvented his piece Still Live to accompany Braking Breath as part of this commission.
The evening closes by bringing all of our artists together, sharing the early stages of a larger work-in-progress that weaves together film, composition, and improvisation and features a birch-wood violin made by Christopherson's great-grandfather, Frank Hobson, known as "The Eskimo Violin Maker."
