We'll be playing Quintet No. 1 by Malcolm Arnold at our March 21 recital. Here's a composer highlight for your reading pleasure!

Sir Malcolm Henry Arnold (1921-2006) was a prolific English composer who wrote in most classical genres, including two fantastic brass quintets and 132 film scores. He took up trumpet after hearing Louis Armstrong perform, studied at the Royal College of Music and later played with BBC Symphony and London Philharmonic. Arnold said that Berlioz, Mahler, Bartok, and jazz influenced his music.

Arnold's Quintet No. 1, Op. 73 is considered standard repertoire for brass quintet. It was finished in 1960, two years after Arnold won an Oscar for his score to _The Bridge on the River Kwai_. We love playing this quintet, and we think you'll love hearing it.

We'd also be interested in hearing Fairbanks performances of Arnold's Harmonica Concerto, or A Grand Grand Overture, which features three vacuum cleaners and a floor polisher.
