Theatre UAF

Theatre UAF Theatre UAF puts students at the heart of live performance. We also offer minors in both Theatre and Film.

With courses in acting, design & stagecraft, plus real production experience, our stage showcases student talent while preparing artists & technicians to create & collaborate. The UAF Department of Theatre and Film provides an undergraduate BA degree in Film & Performing Arts with concentrations in Film or Theatre. Film & Performing Arts majors take a shared core of three classes (Fundamentals of

Acting, Film Set Production I, and Introduction to Production Design) and then choose a concentration in either Film or Theatre. All of our courses can be found under the “FLPA” designator in course finder and in the 2016 catalog. All of our students gain practical experience through working on professional film sets, participating in main-stage productions, and interacting closely with faculty advisors and mentors. Through teaching and production work, our department prepares students to succeed professionally in the Film and Theatre industries, while educating students across disciplines in the fundamental skills of collaboration, communication, and creativity.

This week, we’re celebrating the theatre teachers who do so much more than direct productions.

They build rooms where students feel seen.
They create ensembles where every voice matters.
They help young people step into someone else’s story and, along the way, understand their own a little better.

To every theatre educator calling cues, building confidence, making space, solving problems, drying tears, opening doors, and reminding students that they belong.

Thank you. Your work changes students long after the curtain closes.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week.

We are tremendously proud and excited that Professor Carrie Baker is the new Dean of the UAF College of Liberal Arts! Congratulations!

We are excited to share that University of Alaska Fairbanks Interim Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Charlene Stern has appointed Carrie Baker to serve as the permanent dean of the UAF College of Liberal Arts, effective May 17.

“The liberal arts serve as a critical foundation for all UAF students, thus making the CLA deanship a vitally important decision,” said Stern. “After a competitive national recruitment, Baker was selected from a robust pool of qualified candidates. Her vision for the future of the college, coupled with her collaborative leadership approach, makes her the ideal candidate to lead CLA forward into its next chapter.”

Baker has 20 years of experience at UAF, including serving as a professor of Theatre and Film (2005-2025), chair of CLA’s Theatre and Film Department (2012-2021), and associate dean of CLA (2021-2025). She is a member of the Actors’ Equity Association and Screen Actors Guild, with professional acting credits in stage, television, and film. Baker holds a B.A. in Theatre and English from Middlebury College and an M.F.A. in Acting from the University of California, Irvine.

Please welcome Carrie Baker as the new CLA dean!

We recently had a sneak peek screening of "The Anatomy of Sound" by Taylor Kamrath, which was produced, shot and edited this semester (Spring, 2026). There are still touch-ups to be made, of course, but what an extraordinary accomplishment! Joined by much of the cast and crew.

Excited for the first preview of the project we filmed this semester - written and directed by Film and Performing Arts major Taylor Kamrath!

We're proud of Maya Salganek, Chair of the UAF Department of Theatre & Film, was one of the 2026 Dennis Demmert award recipients which honors those who make sure that Alaska Native students know they belong here. It provides an opportunity for students to nominate a person who they feel has positively affected their academic efforts at UAF.
