What an incredible day at the Folk School of Fairbanks! Our Painted Quilts workshop was completely full, and the outdoor studio was buzzing with creativity from start to finish.

Over the course of five hours, participants learned about the materials and supplies needed to create a painted barn quilt, how to transfer and apply patterns, painting techniques, and color design strategies to make each piece unique. Everyone worked diligently throughout the day, and despite the ambitious timeline and some pretty windy conditions, every participant completed their project with beautiful results.

I’m continually amazed by the creativity, enthusiasm, and determination that people bring to these workshops. Thank you to the Folk School of Fairbanks for hosting and supporting the class, and thank you to everyone who joined us and made the day such a success.

Keep an eye out for the next Painted Barn Quilts workshop coming this holiday season—we’ll be creating festive Holiday Baby Barn Quilts, and I hope to see you there! 🎨✨

One of the joys of the Far North Quilt Trail is seeing the personal stories and community connections behind each barn quilt installation. This beautiful piece, painted by Lorene Cox of In The Lights Quilts, began as a heartfelt birthday gift for her mother after Lorene discovered a quilt pattern she instantly knew was “the one.” She even reached out to the original pattern designer, who was thrilled to see the design transformed into a barn quilt.

Barn quilts celebrate both artistry and storytelling, and this project beautifully captures both.

Now proudly displayed at Risse Greenhouse , the barn quilt can be enjoyed by visitors and the wider community alike. Thank you to Lorene for sharing both her talent and this meaningful family story with the trail!

A new quilt joins the trail ✨

“Bear Tooth,” created by Sydney Mullen is the 64th addition to the Far North Quilt Trail. This piece brings bold geometry and quiet strength to its setting, drawing from the enduring beauty and resilience of the landscapes and lives it reflects.

Sydney created this barn quilt to bring more joy and art into their home.

Each barn quilt on the trail marks a story—of home, of making, of connection. “Bear Tooth” continues that tradition, adding another layer to the growing network of art across the state.

Take a moment to seek it out, and in doing so, become part of the story.

🎉 Welcome Star! 🎉

We’re thrilled to celebrate the 63rd barn quilt on the Far North Quilt Trail and our first submission of 2026! Painted by Sandy Lachman, this Welcome Star is a cheerful design that brightens her Fairbanks shed and perfectly echoes the colors of her garden boxes. 🌼

Sandy’s thoughtful color choice and simple, joyful design remind us how barn quilts bring beauty, personality, and community spirit to every corner of the trail✨

We were so touched to receive this beautiful and thoughtful 25-year celebration card in the mail from Calypso Farm and Ecology Center! 🌿💛

Drawn by the talented .arts it features a sweet rendition of the Hen and Chicks barn quilt located at the farm. We’re so grateful for this kind acknowledgment and for being part of a community that celebrates community, local food and the artistry of quilts.

Roxann Sexton painted this lovely little “Raven in a Double Star” and installed it in Salcha, Alaska becoming number 62 on the Far North Quilt Trail.

“Raven in Double Star was chosen as a pattern because it was my first Barn Quilt Block and I thought I could get it done in the allotted time of the class I took (Painted Quilts led by artist .hahm at in June 2025). Colors were chosen because they were bright and allowed the Raven to stand out as the main feature in the block”. - Roxann

A sweet little August submission came in this week. number 56 on the trail in Pinter by Brittany Powell.

“This is my first attempt at a barn quilt. I picked the pattern to fit an upcycled octagon piece of plywood. I knew I would hang the finished piece on my greenhouse, so a bright cheery sunflower felt like a good fit”. - Brittany Powell
