Went to the No Kings protest over the weekend in downtown LA and did this freestyle spoken word while marching (improvised completely in the moment).
I’ve been reflecting a lot on the purpose of protest under the current Trump regime and the argument that protesting “doesn’t matter”. And while changing laws and policies is ultimately the real change that protests can inspire, the thing about protest is that it helps us realize that we’re not alone and by simply showing up and being there, we’re making a statement that what is happening is not OK, it’s not right and by showing up to a protest there is an immediate feeling of solidarity that we’re all in this struggle together.
One could also argue poetry doesn’t really matter in a moment like this but for me my poetry is the clearest expression of my soul that I can share. It’s not just a poem it is a part of me, so love it or hate it, this is me, with no filters and no apologies.
