Next in our From Nature to Art series, we're getting our hands dirty. Quite literally.
It begins with one of the simplest materials nature gives us: clay. Add water, skilled hands, a potter's wheel or careful hand-building, fire, glaze, and a considerable amount of patience, and a lump of earth becomes something beautiful and useful.
Our potters at South Shore Artisans each bring their own personality to the craft. You'll find colorful bowls and serving pieces, mugs with faces that seem to have opinions about your morning coffee, whimsical animals, soap dispensers, vases, decorative pieces and plenty of creations that stubbornly refuse to fit into any sensible category.
That's part of the fun.
🔥 Clay • Form • Fire • Glaze • Imagination
Every piece is shaped by hand, and the little variations are part of what makes handmade pottery special. No factory line. No thousands of identical copies. Just an artisan taking something from the earth and making it their own.
From nature comes the clay.
From the artisan comes the art.
Come explore the pottery created by our local artisans at South Shore Artisans in Fair Haven. 🌿🏺

Today, From Nature to Art turns its attention to our own Jim Creller of Black Cloud Leather by Jim.
Leather begins with one of nature’s oldest materials, and in Jim’s hands it becomes something meant to be used, carried, worn and enjoyed for years.
From hand-tooled wallets, journals and bags to belts, dog collars, keychains, bracelets and one-of-a-kind pieces, Jim combines traditional leatherworking techniques with designs ranging from classic to downright unusual. And when inspiration wanders off the sensible path, apparently you end up with things like leather skulls and a remarkably intimidating wolf mask. 😂
Every piece starts with leather, but cutting, carving, tooling, dyeing, stitching and finishing are what turn that natural material into something entirely new.
And sometimes the work gets put to the test. That pirate outfit didn't accessorize itself. 🏴‍☠️
🌿 Leather • Hand Tooling • Carving • Stitching • Functional Art
From nature comes the material.
From the artisan comes the story.

Sometimes nature provides the materials. Tina provides the imagination.

A smooth stone becomes a wide-eyed elephant, a curious otter or a colorful rooster. Driftwood, natural finds, cord and beads become one-of-a-kind macramĂŠ pieces, dreamcatchers and wall art.

Tina's work is a perfect example of what our From Nature to Art series is all about: taking the shapes, textures and materials found in nature and seeing what they could become.

Take a closer look at Tina's creations the next time you visit South Shore Artisans. You may never look at an ordinary rock quite the same way again

For Deanna, a piece of wood isn't just raw material. The grain, color and character are already part of the design.

From beautifully turned bowls and handcrafted boxes to cutting and serving boards, baskets, home dĂŠcor and one-of-a-kind creations, Deanna lets the natural beauty of the wood take center stage.

Different woods bring their own colors, patterns, knots and imperfections, making every handcrafted piece truly unique. And judging by the variety in her display, apparently Deanna has never met a piece of wood she couldn't turn into something useful.
