Calvin Carrière (September 10, 1921 – March 3, 2002) was a distinguished American Creole fiddler renowned for his contributions to Zydeco and La-La music. Born in Lawtell, Louisiana, Carrière hailed from a family deeply rooted in Creole musical traditions. He learned to play the fiddle from his uncle, Joseph "Bébé" Carrière, and the accordion from his father, Eraste "Dalon" Carrière, both of whom were influential musicians in their own right.
The Carrière family played a pivotal role in the evolution of Creole music, particularly in the transition from traditional La-La to Zydeco. Calvin, alongside his father and uncle, formed the Carrière Brothers, a group that served as a bridge between these musical styles. Their performances were instrumental in preserving the rich heritage of Creole music and introducing it to broader audiences. h
In 1976, folklorist Nick Spitzer recorded the Carrière Brothers and the Lawtell Playboys, capturing the essence of La-La music and its Afro-Caribbean and Eastern European influences. These recordings, later released as "La La: Louisiana Black French Music," provide valuable insights into the roots of Zydeco and highlight the Carrière family's significant contributions to the genre.
Calvin Carrière's fiddling style was deeply influenced by early Louisiana jazz, incorporating elements from the 1930s and 1940s string band era. His ability to blend various musical traditions enriched the Zydeco genre and showcased the versatility of Creole music.
