Shaman's Oyster Catcher Rattles were used by tribes in the Pacific Northwest Coast area. The other tribes of the region used similar rattles.

Shamans shook such rattles over an afflicted person’s body for protection. This rattle depicts a long-billed bird called an oyster catcher.

The oyster catcher is a transformative animal because it lives in the sky yet dives beneath the water for sustenance. Riding on the bird’s back is the image of a shaman. He is being transformed into a land otter.

This is a replica of a rattle that made by a Tlingit carver in the 19th century.
