Say hello to Mr. Pickle! 🐜

Pickle, our male Giant Anteater celebrated his 9th birthday last November!

With their long snouts and even longer tongues, Giant Anteaters live up to their names, as they are built for snacking. They can even flick their tongues up to 150 times per minute to scoop up ants!

Giant Anteaters are currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with habitat loss being their biggest threat in the wild.

You can find Pickle hanging out in the South American region of the African Panorama, just past the penguin habitat.

Mesker Park Zoo is excited to welcome Reba, a young female jaguar born in October 2024 at the Baton Rouge Zoo. 🐾 
 
As Reba adjusts to her new home, guests may spot her exploring the tiger habitat in our Asia region. This temporary space will allow her to become familiar with her surroundings, establish routines with her animal care team, and continue building confidence in a new environment. Once she’s ready, she’ll make her debut in the jaguar habitat in Amazonia! 
 
Because jaguars are naturally solitary animals, Reba and Beliza will take turns occupying the jaguar habitat. They will rotate through the space, providing each animal opportunities for exploration and enrichment while supporting their natural behaviors. 
 
This move was coordinated with the AZA Jaguar SSP, a cooperative population management and conservation strategy of all jaguars in AZA accredited facilities. Jaguars are currently listed as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), making every opportunity to connect guests with this incredible species even more meaningful.

Can you BELIEVE IT??

We’re so pleased to introduce the newest members of our Humboldt Penguin colony: Colby and Durango! 🧀🐧

The chicks hatched in April and have been doing well behind the scenes, with our Animal Care Team keeping a close eye on their growth and feeding.

Both eggs were incubated by Louie and Sandy, but because raising two chicks can be challenging for first-time penguin parents, our team decided to give one of the eggs to a more experienced pair, Adrian and Chirrida. This type of foster-rearing is a common strategy used for managing penguins in human care.

If the name Louie sounds familiar, that’s because he was the very first penguin chick ever hatched at Mesker Park Zoo!

Watching him grow into an adult and show appropriate chick rearing behaviors has been incredibly special for our team to witness. Plus, his parents are Adrian and Chirrida, so they have been fostering their own “grand-penguin.”

We can’t wait for everyone to have the chance to watch these little ones on habitat soon!

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the zoo at Zoo Brew 2026: Tropical Takeover this Saturday!

From incredible music to amazing food, delicious drinks, and unforgettable outfits, you all helped make this year’s event one to remember. The energy was infections, and seeing the zoo filled with so many people having fun for a great cause was truly special.

A huge thank you to all of our vendors who showed up and showed OUT! You helped create an amazing experience for our guests!

After 27 years at Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden, our Guest Services Manager, Stephanie, is retiring!

Today, Stephanie was presented with a Key to the City for spending the last nearly three decades creating an incredibly welcoming environment for guests at Mesker Park Zoo.

Last year, Stephanie was also honored by Mayor Stephanie Terry with a Certificate of Recognition for her exceptional work and dedication.

While we’re excited for her as she begins this well-earned retirement, she’ll certainly be missed by all of us. We’re also grateful to her family, who have shared so much of her time with the zoo over the years.

Please join us in thanking Stephanie for her 27 years of service and wishing her all the best on her next adventure!
