Today is ! It's a day to promote the rescue & adoption of dogs. While MPZ doesn't have any actual dogs, we do have Mexican wolves (the domestic dog descends from a now extinct relative of the wolf).

To pay tribute to the life of the iconic Dolly Parton, we invite you to explore MPZ's Little Free Libraries located near the zoo's entrance. Dolly not only gave books to countless children through her nonprofit Imagination Library, she also partnered with American Eagle Foundation for 35 years, proceeds from her Doggy Parton pet line helped support Willa B Farms Animal Rescue, & each of her businesses promote monarch conservation through butterfly gardens & monarch waystations.

Aging brings extra responsibilities no matter your species. For Little Dipper, this includes representing an entire critically endangered species. At 24 years old, not only is Little Dipper considered a "senior citizen" but she's also an ambassador for her species. Red ruffed lemurs are critically endangered with their population numbers trending downward primarily due to deforestation, hunting, & climate change.

It's nap time for Joey & the whistling ducks! 😴💤 Baird's tapirs such as Joey are mostly nocturnal. They do most of their sleeping during the daytime hours & forage for food between dusk & dawn.

Happy ! August 19 marks the date in 1839 when the French government bought the patent for the daguerreotype photographic process & gave it to the world as a free gift. Harper's just gotta be herself, bro. Beautification is an entire process when you're a Humboldt penguin. Sure, it looks like Harper had a tussle with a feather pillow & a honeycomb, but thankfully this is just temporary. Once a year, Humboldt penguins undergo a catastrophic molt, meaning they shed all their worn-out feathers at once over 2 weeks to grow a new, waterproof plumage. This process involves eating up to 3 times their usual food intake to build body fat reserves, because they remain entirely on land after losing their feathers & fast during this time. Once the new waterproof feathers fully grow in, they return to the water to swim & eat as usual.
