🐭 NUTCRACKER DID YOU KNOW? #2: THE ORIGINAL STORY WAS A LITTLE… CREEPY!

The ballet we know and love today is based on a story by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

And let's just say… the original story was considerably darker than the sweet holiday ballet we know today!

Hoffmann's 1816 tale included a mysterious Nutcracker, a fierce battle with the Mouse King, and a young girl named Marie who finds herself caught up in a strange and magical world.

Years later, Alexandre Dumas adapted the story into a lighter version, which eventually inspired the ballet.

So the next time you watch Clara's magical adventure, remember: it all started with a very different kind of fairy tale! ✨

In just 14 weeks, we’ll be stepping into a world of snowflakes, sweets, dancing toys, and Christmas magic at the Victory Theatre. 🩰❄️

✨ BALLET INDIANA WELCOMES SUNNY HSIEH! ✨

Ballet Indiana is thrilled to announce Sunny Hsieh as our new Artistic Director! 🩰

With an impressive career as a professional dancer, performer, and teacher, Sunny brings a wealth of experience and passion for ballet to our organization.

Born in Taiwan and raised in Canada, Sunny trained at Stepanova Ballet Academy in Toronto and began working with Canadian dance legend Evelyn Hart at just sixteen.

His professional career includes Orlando Ballet, Ballet Palm Beach, Ballet Des Moines, Ballet Spartanburg, Colorado West Ballet, and most recently, Canyon Concert Ballet, where he was named Principal Dancer.

His notable roles include Albrecht in Giselle, Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, and the title role in The Picture of Dorian Gray.

We are so excited to welcome Sunny to Ballet Indiana and look forward to the artistry, experience, and leadership he will bring to our dancers!

🎄 And what better way to begin this new chapter than with a little holiday magic? Sunny will make his Ballet Indiana debut as Artistic Director with this year's production of The Nutcracker!

✨ NUTCRACKER DID YOU KNOW? #1: IT ALL STARTED IN RUSSIA! ✨

Did you know The Nutcracker premiered more than 130 years ago?

The ballet made its debut on December 18, 1892, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, with music by the legendary composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

And while it is now one of the most beloved holiday traditions around the world, The Nutcracker wasn't an instant success!

Today, we can't imagine Christmas without it. 🎄🩰✨
