2025 Featured Video Project: Poppy Mountain Music Festival

I completed a solo documentary style event promotion for Poppy Mountain Music Festival in Morehead, Kentucky. The directors asked me to “make a video of the event” with little further direction. (A pretty common request in the freelance video world and honestly, it often makes for a better video when there’s less input from people not making it.)

I knew almost nothing about bluegrass music and used that perspective as the foundation for a documentary promotional piece told from the point of view of a first time attendee. I touched on the history of the festival as well as newer performers within a slowly fading genre of music. As expected, it was rewarding to learn and speak with people about their passions.

2025 Featured Video Project: Animation Reel

People often mention the movie Up after watching this, which makes sense given the visual storytelling and the old man and dog dynamic.

The animation itself is rough and far from professional, but the story still comes through.

Audio mixing is an area I continue to work on, and when the bulk of the effort goes into animation, sound design can easily take a back seat (though the music might be my favorite part).

This personal project was about understanding how far visuals, pacing, and sound can carry a narrative.

2025 Featured Video Project: South African Safari

In April I completed a documentary project in Limpopo, South Africa, following three men through a hunting safari experience. The primary challenge I faced was knowing there are opposing opinions around hunting. I chose to take a neutral stance, approaching it as an activity that exists in the world rather than commentary on it.

In reflection, neutrality has its disadvantages. Those who opposed this activity still feel it should not be given a platform. While those involved in the activity felt like the experience was not presented in an overly positive light. Navigating the tension on a topic like this was a lesson learned.

I handled the project solo from filming to storyline and narration, and the video went on to perform well on YouTube.
