American Music Theatre Project

American Music Theatre Project AMTP at Northwestern University develops new musicals through uniquely tailored processes

In addition to working on their show, visiting artists are encouraged to expand their AMTP experience beyond the rehearsal room and to become integrated in the vibrant Northwestern theatre community by teaching workshops, master classes or lectures. In this way, AMTP enriches Northwestern University’s acclaimed music theatre program beyond the scope of a traditional curriculum to cultivate the nex

t generation of aspiring writers, directors, choreographers, music directors, producers, and stage managers, in addition to performers, by giving them the opportunity to work alongside seasoned professionals. The core of AMTP’s programming is a series of workshops and readings of brand new musicals in the early stages of development. These presentations are not fully staged – actors use scripts and read from music. Though often culminating in public presentations, the goal of this program is to provide time and resources for a creative team to see a piece on its feet before taking it to full production. While valuable for the professional creative teams and AMTP’s audience members, student participants in all disciplines have the invaluable experience of participating in this type of creative process while still an undergraduate, preparing them for professional experiences beyond Northwestern.
