The first time I saw Lake Michigan was in 1999 when I came to Chicago to visit potential graduate schools. I was mesmerized by how expansive it is. It made me think I was at the ocean. Water has always been soothing to me. This is because I am a fire sign. The feeling of swimming on Lake Michigan is brisk and invigorating. For over 25 years I have lived near it. It has inspired me to run marathons, face my fears and connect more with environmental concerns. This painting, “The Lake Michigan Effect,” is a small study I did for a larger commission. It is available in the silent auction for the Taste of Evanston tomorrow.

Words to live by. We lost an icon today. She cared enough to give back — she was not afraid to be who she was. Sure—people judged her, as people do. But underneath it all I could see her heart ❤️ and that’s what really matters. Rest in peace—I will always remember her song, “Coat of many colors.” My grandma was one of 12 kids raised in Kentucky. She played this song for me and told me about her childhood, and how she could relate. Look how far she had come

Here is a small 9 by 13 inch gouache study of Lake Michigan I made today for a client who commissioned me for a larger oil painting. I always paint a small gouache study first before embarking upon the finished piece. Yes often the looser study becomes my favorite. Gouache is an opaque, water soluble version of watercolor that contains ground up chalk. I use it on toned paper because I always tone the surfaces of my oil paintings. The neutral mid tone makes it easier to assess value structures. I think value is very important when it comes to understanding color theory.
