With two world premiere compositions and musical portraits both "Coming Together" and "splitting to collapse," the Contemporary Music Ensemble's May 23 concert promises a powerful evening of music. Join us for selections by Elijah Daniel Smith, Matthew Huang Mailman, and Jianing Yang, as well as Composition and Music Technology assistant professor Kelley Sheehan's work meant to evoke an inevitable end. The concert's centerpiece, Frederic Rzewski's "Coming Together," features Samuel Melville's poetic and unflinching commentary on his life in prison—narrated by special guest and Northwestern alumnus James Soto, who earned his degree after 42 years of wrongful incarceration.

This Friday, Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble presents an evening of musical storytelling centering around "Yes Day!," a world premiere by student composer Tanner Carlson-Huber in partnership with The Sing Me a Story Foundation, which takes stories written by kids in need and pairs them with composers who transform them into songs. "Yes Day!," written and illustrated by Riley and Reese Frano for their brother Bodie, tells the Frano family's story of a fun day out, a challenging cancer diagnosis, a powerful community fundraiser, and a joyful step towards healing.
