Based on the Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name, this play follows Richard Hannay in a fast-paced adventure across Britain. About "The 39 Steps":
This year, Arts Alliance is proud to present The 39 Steps as its fall mainstage show. The 39 Steps is a play adapted from a film, adapted from a book. The novel was among the first spy stories ever published. As a young filmmaker, Alfred Hitchcock a
dapted the novel into a movie of the same title that catapulted him and his career into the spotlight. Many Hitchcock lovers regard it as his greatest film. A full seventy years later, a group of British comedians brought the beloved story to life in a brand new way: condensing the 150-character film into a two-act play to be performed by four extremely versatile actors. It opened to great success in January of 2008 and ran for 771 performances (more than any other comedic play in Broadway history!). Our play tells a suspenseful, mysterious story with ingeniously crafted elements of parody, satire, comedy, and farce. The lead, Richard Hannay, starts off feeling dejected and dissatisfied with his life, so he goes to his flat and ponders what to do. As many of us might do in his situation, he decides to go to the theatre. There, he meets Annabella, a glamorous spy. She fires a shot into the air and in the pandemonium, she goes home with Hannay. In the morning, he finds her dead in his flat, kick starting a cross-country adventure of epic proportions. This is a story of deception, love, mystery, and intrigue.
