This has got to stop...
We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of the legendary Tim Curry, who died peacefully on August 25 at age 80.
Curry was, and always will be, the definitive Dr. Frank-N-Furter. He originated the role on stage in 1973 before bringing the "sweet transvestite from Tr*******al, Transylvania" to life in the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was a performance that was fearless, funny, and fiercely original, one that gave generations of fans permission to "Don't dream it, be it."
His career spanned six decades. He was the quick-witted butler Wadsworth in Clue (1985), the chilling Pennywise the Clown in Stephen King's It (1990), and the sinister Lord of Darkness in Ridley Scott's Legend (1985). We will proudly screen Legend at the Eureka Theater this year as part of our 80's series when it returns this fall.
Curry also brought his signature charm to roles like Rooster in Annie (1982), Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island (1996), the suspicious concierge in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), and the villainous Hexxus in FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992). He earned three Tony nominations for Amadeus, My Favorite Year, and Spamalot.
Tim Curry's legacy is one of freedom, fearlessness, and joy. He showed us it was okay to be different, to be bold, and to live out loud. As he once said, "Playing somebody like that wakes you up to new dimensions of human nature. I learned not to limit myself, artistically, professionally, sexually, or mentally."
We will miss him dearly, but his spirit will forever live on in the Time Warp and in every person who ever dared to "give themselves over to absolute pleasure."
