On this day in , June 11th, 1982, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial was released. It was directed by Steven Spielberg. Numerous scenes were filmed on private property: The aliens' landing, E.T.’s near-death experience, and E.T.’s final phone home were all captured at the Palmer Westbrook Ranches. The film features the actors: Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, Drew Barrymore, and Henry Thomas.

Location of the Map of the Movies marker: Near the intersection of Hwy 101 and Westbrook Lane, north of Smith River. The marker is on the northbound fence, approximately 50 feet south of the intersection. (Be aware of traffic while viewing the marker.)

Less than two weeks until Humboldt becomes the Endor of your dreams.

The Forest Moon Festival is back May 28–31, four days celebrating this region's legendary connection to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, which was filmed in Humboldt redwoods in 1982. The full schedule is live and it's a good one.

Thursday kicks off with an opening night screening of A Disturbance in the Force at the Redwood Coast Museum of Cinema with producer Kyle Newman in attendance. Friday brings a Forest Moon takeover of Friday Night Market in Old Town. Saturday is the big day: a free Star Wars panel at Sequoia Park with an actual Return of the Jedi Ewok performer, a free outdoor screening of Return of the Jedi under the redwoods, and Forest Fest at Sequoia Park Zoo for the 21+ crowd with brews, bites, and the Redwood Sky Walk at twilight. Sunday closes with a pancake breakfast and a screening of Spaceballs in honor of Mel Brooks' 100th birthday.

There's also a passport game, scavenger hunt, and participating businesses across the county all weekend.
