Sometimes, the best way to get an orchestra to play what you’re hearing in your head is to sing it yourself. 🎶

At rehearsal, Alex Prior does just that. Singing a phrase lets the musicians hear how he wants it to feel. His gestures help shape the sound, showing where the music needs more weight or a lighter touch.

It’s a conversation between conductor and orchestra, with plenty of singing along the way.

Opening night is this Thursday, October 15, and you don’t need to be a classical music expert to be in the room.

When we asked Alex what people should listen for, his answer surprised us: whatever moves you. Everyone brings their own life into the music, so what a piece says to you might be completely different from what it says to the person next to you, and both are right.

He compared it to Taylor Swift songs: everyone thinks the lyrics are about them, and that’s the genius. Great music works the same way.

What he hopes you leave with is a feeling of being connected to the people around you, and a reminder of how much we all have in common. Three pieces, one night, a full orchestra, and a hall full of neighbors.
