Is Sarastro the villain, or just misunderstood? Sarastro puts Tamino through a series of tests to prove how worthy he is of Pamina's love. Although he might be trying to play matchmaker between the two, he better watch out for The Queen of the Night.

Don't miss Andrew Potter in this classic role. Costume Designer Kristie Mattson envisions his costume as part Dr. Strange and part Dumbledore. We love her vision!

Tamino falls madly in love with a photo of The Queen of the Night's daughter, Pamina. He sets out on a wild quest to rescue the princess from Sarastro where he will ultimately be put to the test. How romantic is that?

We are thrilled to watch our standout performer Derrek Stark, tenor, interpret the role of Tamino on the 28th and 30th of this month. Here's a vision board of Tamino by our lovely costume designer to get you thinking!

Papagena, played by Eugene Opera favorite Jocelyn Claire Thomas, maybe be a minor character, but her presence is major! Costume Designer Kristie Mattsson's design for the Papageno, the bird catcher's, better half is stunning.

Remember the charming & lovely Papageno & Papagena duet? We love happily ever after. 😍https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKf_bNKEkq0 (from Nashville Opera)

Costume designer Kristie Mattsson's inspiration board for the Queen's dress evokes the roaring 20s with a little gothic flavor. We can't wait to see her vision come to life on stage in Melanie Spector's performance.

Did you know? The earliest Christmas opera -- and one of the earliest operas of any kind -- was Il gran natale di Christo salvator nostro (The Great Nativity of Christ, Our Saviour), composed by Giovanni Battista da Gagliano and Jacopo Peri to a libretto by Jacopo Cicognini.

It was first performed on Christmas Day in 1622 in Florence. The Christmas theme allowed the opera to go ahead, despite the closures of public theaters during Advent.

The opera world has lost a giant, and Eugene Opera has lost a friend. Eugene Opera was so lucky to have Jake Gardner’s artistry for numerous productions over the past decade: among them, the elder Germont, Judge Turpin, Dr. Bartolo, Prince Gremin and Sir Joseph Porter. All of us in Eugene are devastated, and send our heartfelt condolences to his wife and artistic partner Jill Bowen Gardner and family . We will miss Jake’s warmth, intelligence, and immense presence onstage and off. He defined professionalism, and his kindness towards his colleagues was legendary - truly a kind soul and special artist. Rest In Peace, dear Jake.

Eugene Opera Friends, Tosca is playing tonight until tomorrow afternoon, free, on the Met Opera app or web site. They offer a free opera each day. You don’t have to join to watch this. Don’t press seven day free trial, just press explore the app.
Concerned about gatherings and coronavirus. May want to cancel tickets to Tosca. Are tickets refundable
For the Sunday 30 December matinee of Pinafore, how about inviting the audience to sing along with the chorus parts (one can never have too many British tars, sisters, cousins or aunts)?
"Classical music often gets a bad rap in movies. When you hear Mozart in a James Bond film, chances are the villain is using his trusty feed-foes-to-the-sharks contraption. Wagner is a soundtrack for violence. Bach? Dinner music. For Hannibal Lecter.....So the release on Sept. 14 of “Bel Canto” — an adaptation of Ann Patchett’s hugely successful 2001 novel of the same name, starring Julianne Moore as an American diva caught up in a hostage drama in South America — gives opera a welcome chance to return to the screen in a very different key."
Eugene Opera’s “The Barber of Seville” was one of the top six operas to see over the weekend, according to OperaWire.
This day in opera history (and elsewhere) 25 April 1917 Ella Fitzgerald, the First Lady of Song, born in Newport News VA "I never knew how good our songs were," Ira Gershwin once said, "until I heard Ella Fitzgerald sing them." My friends, Please permit me to celebrate a beautiful late April day in South Bend IN by sharing with you one of my favorite things in the whole world: a perfect song in a perfect performance from a practically perfect album (The Rodgers and Hart Songbook). Enjoy!
