Sanibonani: Hello, how are you?

Sanibonani: Hello, how are you? Innovative, collaborative, global Afro theater. Images and dances remind us of the US Civil Rights Movement and contemporary Black Lives Matter Movement.

Sanibonani which just simply means “Hello how are you?” in Zulu is an innovative musical theater show in development from lead artists Tumelo Michael Moloi and Joshua Caraco. Loosely structured around Moloi’s upbringing in South Africa during the latter years of Apartheid and his journey through other parts of Africa and the US, the real story is not his personal one but the origins of dance and m

usic. Experience the goldmine origins of Gumboot Dance, animals and hunters of rural village life, and urban Pantsula Dance protesting Apartheid. The melding of instruments such as Kora and dances from West Africa with the dances and instruments like Mbira from southern Africa reminds us of the community Africans of the diaspora make in the US. A diverse and collaborative cast brings a show full of song, dance, poetry, chances for learning, and humor even in the wake of dark topics. This project is generously supported by a Creative Heights Grant from the Oregon Community Foundation and fiscally sponsored by Lane Arts Council.

We are still going through photos and footage from the show and will have more to come. But we can’t help but tease you a little! This show was so hard to describe to people before presenting and we are so happy so many people came out to experience the music, the theater, the community, the history, the dance! You laughed, you cried, we laughed, we cried. See you all soon!

Sanibonani (Hello, How Are You?) is collaborative, innovative, global afro theater. A masterful team of internationally renowned artists, led by Cirque du Soleil alum Tumelo Michael Moloi, takes us on a journey through the forests and mines of Africa. African history told through song, dance, and poetry reminds us of its connection to US history. A special group of performers with experience all over the world with acts as different as the circus is from Usher and Usher is from Pink Martini. If you’re passionate about music, history, and collaboration, consider joining us and together we can create something special that resonates with audiences today and for generations to come.
