What I’m learning about myself as a “teacher”…
I’ve learned I prepare for classes the same way I used to prepare for photoshoots. I plan, plan, plan… and then once I’m there, I trust myself enough to let the people in front of me help shape what happens.
I’ve learned I LOVE questions. I love answering with a quick demo because most artists are visual, and sometimes seeing it happen makes the point so much clearer than words ever could.
I’ve learned I’m happiest when there’s structure, but still plenty of room to play, experiment, change direction, and follow curiosity.
I’ve learned I don’t want anyone getting bored. 😂 I like changing things up throughout class—little icebreakers, demos, practice, experiments, and painting time—so there’s always something new happening.
I’ve learned I want everyone to leave with something that feels like theirs. I want to share what I know openly, give them tools, ideas, and inspiration, and help them make their own artistic choices.
I’ve also realized how much being around other creatives fills me up. I’ve always known I loved that, but now that I get to spend time with so many creative people every week, I really feel it.
And I’ve learned I absolutely LOVE inspiring others. Seeing someone get excited about what they’re learning might be my favorite part of all of this.
I think my guiding light will always be this: I want to be the kind of teacher I wish I had when I was starting watercolor—curious, open, honest, generous, and always willing to explain the why.
