MEET SEVERA GUTIERREZ-TAFOYA (Santa Clara Pueblo - the K'apovi, or the Kha'p'oo Owinge) a renowned ceramic artist with her husband, José Cleto Tafoya (and an unidentified young girl).

Severa (1890-1973) was the matriarch of a family of renowned potters, including Angela Baca, Tonita Tafoya, and Lydia Tafoya. Other direct descendants include Paul Speckled Rock, Ray Tafoya, Tina Garcia, Greg Garcia, Robert Cleto Nichols, Jennifer Moquino, and Jason Garcia.

Severa and her family are credited with inspiring the reemergence of polished blackware when other potters observed them smothering the fire surrounding the pottery during the outdoor firing process, causing the smoke to be trapped and deposited into the clay, creating various shades of black to gunmetal color.

Many collectors say Severa never received the renown she should have had. She was an extraordinary potter during the 1950s and 1960s, during a time when pottery was not in the mainstream as it is now. Had today's collectors been collecting pottery in the mid-1900s, many feel she would have been high on their list.

Severa Gutierrez Tafoya was an active potter for almost 60 years. Through her family and her work, her legacy lives on.
