A Different Way of Working With Women

I’m a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner, but somatics is only part of what I bring to this work.

For more than a decade, I’ve been exploring what actually supports women in feeling good in their bodies, trusting themselves, experiencing desire, navigating relationships, and creating lives that feel like their own.

Because women aren’t men with different hormones.

We have different bodies. Different rhythms. Different ways of experiencing energy, emotion, desire, and capacity. We’re cyclical beings...and yet so much of what we’ve been taught about productivity, consistency, health, relationships, s*xuality, and even personal growth was built around a model that doesn’t account for that.

And so much of women’s self-development has been organized around one question:

What’s wrong with me, and how do I fix it? Not enoughness!

I’m interested in a different question:

What happens when you stop making yourself the problem?

Yes, we work with the places that hurt. The patterns that keep repeating. The overwhelm, disconnection, symptoms, anxiety, grief, shame, and protective strategies.

But we don’t make those things your identity, or the entirety of the work.

We also pay attention to what’s right with you.

What feels good.
What lights you up.
What your body says yes to.
What you actually want.
Where you’re already brilliant.
What happens when you give yourself permission instead of waiting for approval.
What thriving actually feels like in your body.

This is where somatics meets embodiment, self-approval, nervous-system awareness, cyclical living, s*xuality, boundaries, parts work, and the messy reality of being a woman.

Not another project of becoming a better version of yourself.

A deeper relationship with the woman who is already here.

17 years.

17 years ago, I married this man. And now here we are, with our sons…one just starting high school and the other starting junior high.

17 years of marriage. 17 years of growing together, building a family, raising kids, changing, learning, laughing, arguing, figuring it out, and choosing each other through all of it.

And somehow, we went from newlyweds to parents of two teenagers.

How did that happen?

17 years. A whole lot of life. And I’d choose you all over again.

Happy 17th anniversary to us. ❤️

This might just save you years of confusion.

Lyuba had this thought:

“$€ isn’t for women.”

It came from a time when $eggs wasn’t pleasurable for her, while she could see her partner enjoying it.

And maybe you’ve had your own version of that thought.

“Why don’t I want $€x?”

Have you ever wondered what’s wrong with you because you don’t?

Maybe you’ve felt broken.
Maybe you love your partner but don’t feel desire.
Maybe $€x feels like something you should want, but don’t.
Maybe you’ve blamed your hormones, your age, stress, or assumed you just have a low libido.

But what if there’s another question to ask?

What if it isn’t only about libido?
What if it’s about desire?

And here’s where it gets interesting: desire and pleasure aren’t the same thing. You can have the capacity for pleasure without feeling spontaneous desire. And understanding that distinction can completely change how you think about your $€x.uality.

In this episode of Everyday Intimacy, Lyuba Venable and I explore why so many women struggle to want $€x, what can get in the way of desire, and why so many women quietly wonder if s*x just isn’t for them.

Self criticism doesn’t lead to self love.
We can’t hate our way to healing.

Sounds obvious, but it is a foundation of my work.

A part of us is the critic. Often, it developed to protect us: to help us avoid rejection, stay alert, get things right, or push ourselves to do better. But that part can get so loud it drowns everything else out…our needs, our strengths, our progress, and our capacity to hear anything kind or true about ourselves.

We also have what’s called a negativity bias: a natural tendency for the brain to notice, remember, and give more weight to threats, mistakes, criticism, and what is missing than to what is safe, good, or going well. It is a survival mechanism, but it can make one mistake outweigh ten moments of growth, and one critical thought feel more true than all the evidence to the contrary.

The inner critic can sound like motivation or accountability. But shame is not accountability, and cruelty is not growth.

What many of us don’t realize is that the potent medicine is self-approval.

Self-approval does not mean denying what needs to change or excusing harm. It means being on your own side as you face what is true. It means: “I can acknowledge this mistake without making it proof that I am unworthy.” I can grow, repair, and do better without withholding compassion from myself.

Healing does not grow from self-rejection. It grows when we can meet ourselves with honesty, care, and approval, right in the middle of becoming.

Healing is not about getting rid of the ways you learned to protect yourself.

It is about meeting them with compassion.

Understanding that the overachiever was trying to keep you safe.
That the people-pleaser was trying to preserve connection.
That the need to stay in control was trying to prevent disappointment, uncertainty, or hurt.
That the caretaker learned it might be safer to focus on everyone else’s needs than to have needs of her own.

None of these ways of being are the enemy.

They are evidence of how hard you worked to survive, belong, and be loved.

And when your body begins to experience more safety…through supportive relationships, clear boundaries, rest, presence, and being met without having to perform, these protective patterns do not need to run the whole show.

They can soften.

Not because you force them to.
Not because you shame yourself into changing.
But because something in you begins to understand:

“We are safe enough now.”

And from there, more of you has room to emerge.

The you beneath the striving.
The you beneath the proving.
The you beneath the role of being the strong one.

Curious.
Playful.
Desiring.
Creative.
Connected.
Alive.

You are not here to erase the woman who survived.

You are here to let her rest, so the woman you have always been can finally take up space.
