When I started this business almost exactly 12 years ago I didn’t have a 10 year plan, or a 5 year plan, or even a 1 year plan: I just wanted to record an album. So I rented an office space and bought some equipment, and by the time I finished that album I had a long list of friends and strangers queued up for even more musical collaborations. I’ve been blessed to be a part in some way or form of dozens of albums and hundreds of other recordings spanning every genre on the dial, all from that humble little space in the 1892 Mission Hospital building (which many of my friends still maintain is extremely haunted).
The music scene slowed down a lot in 2020 but the music industry did not. Musicians never stop working, even when nobody is paying us, and with the spotlights off most of us were still toiling away behind the scenes. We’ll start seeing the fruits of those labors as the world comes back to life this spring - new albums, new collaborations, new bands, and for my part: a new studio!
The Park Place dungeon served us well for over a decade and will always hold a very special place in my heart, but from the very beginning I’ve had my sights set on a more versatile and long term solution, and that’s what I’m stoked to tell you about today! Behold, the new and improved Good Flow Recording: a cute-as-a-button little building in the heart of downtown Erwin, Tennessee. Located just 40 minutes from our old Asheville location just on the other side of the Blue Ridge, with over 2200sq ft of production space, 16’ ceilings, and 3 layers of brick and mortar between us and our (very cool) neighbors making us a viable 24/7 operation. We have Music Mountain music store down the block, the Erwin Skate Park across the street, and on-site musician barracks are in the works. I scouted probably every commercial property in an hour radius of Asheville and could not possibly be more excited about this town as our new home.
The wheels are in motion to be open to the public very soon, and some of my long term collaborators have already been up here cutting tracks and helping me to get things up and running. I look forward to sharing this journey with you all, and I can’t wait to see what the next 12 years will bring out of this studio in its new home. For all my WNC musician friends, if we haven’t made music in a while let’s get back in touch, I miss y’all. To my new East Tennessee musician neighbors - stop on in and say hey, I can’t wait to meet you!
