📣Big announcement: WE ARE MOVING!!

🫶🏼It has been a rollercoaster of emotions to finally make this decision, however with each day comes more clarity and excitement for our next chapter.

🌴We are grateful to each person we have connected with here in Englewood, FL. This small coastal town is not only where we have built Garden of the Arts these last 3 years, but also the town I grew up in.

🏡Our next adventure finds us in Tryon, NC. We have purchased a multi-generational home with my parents.

❤️With this move, we will be blessed to be closer to some of Matt's family too. We also look forward to hiking & foraging in forests, exploring new towns & cities, and of course, to gardening in a new climate. Rest assured, we already have a long plant list and big dreams for our new property!

🌞Our next post will include more photos of our home and gardens, which are currently FOR SALE BY OWNER.

🗓️The November Food Forest Garden Tour is cancelled.

💪We have some cleaning up to do and want to give more time for recovery after Hurricane Milton turned everything brown.

🌀Post-Hurricane Milton Garden Report (part 3/3):

📅Hurricane Milton made landfall in the evening of October 9th, 2024. These pictures were captured this morning, October 29th, now 20 days post-hurricane.

🍃All of the green leaves, buds, and fruits in these pictures are entirely new growth since the hurricane. In the days after the storm, these plants had either entirely dropped their leaves or the leaves had turned brown.

💜As mentioned in part 1/3 of this 'Hurricane Report' series, when the mulberry tree loses it's leaves, we can expect a heavy fruiting to follow. We are already seeing the mulberry tree loaded with young fruits as our anticipation of enjoying many mulberries grows. The fruits currently look like white and green caterpillars. This winter, these fruits will be a dark purple and at least 3-4 times as big.

✨Edible plants included in this order:
Mulberry
Peanut Butter Fruit
Bananas
Cacao
Beautyberry
Clove Basil
Barbados Cherry
Cassava/Yuca
Strawberry Tree (Muntingia)

🌳As hurricanes and extreme weather conditions strike Florida, we look to plants like these that are resilient.

👨‍🌾Are you seeing new growth in your gardens? What other plants are proving themselves to be resilient?

🌀Post-Hurricane Milton Garden Report (part 1/3):

📅Hurricane Milton made landfall in the evening of October 9th, 2024. These pictures were taken late this morning (October 17th), just over 1 week post-hurricane.

🍂These are plants observed with the highest visible damage. We are defining that as >80% brown leaves or leaf drop.

😵While this damage may look dismal, we anticipate many of our plants to come back strong.

✨Edible plants included in this order:
Barbados Cherry
Beautyberry (native)
Clove Basil
Jackfruit
Katuk
Mulberry
Papaya

💜This same mulberry was stripped of all it's leaves with Hurricane Ian in 2022. After researching it at the time, we learned Mulberries (and other select fruit trees), will respond to 'deleafing' with a heavy fruiting. In just a couple months after Hurricane Ian, we had an awesome mulberry season.

☠️Some plants are less resilient. We don't anticipate the katuk or papayas to make a come back.

🌿The remaining plants pictured in this post are likely to survive! Only time will tell.

🌀Before & After Hurricane Milton (and Hurricane Helene)

🙏We were fortunate to have no storm surge enter our home, or as far as we are aware, to come onto our land.

🌳Our gardens were looking super lush this summer. We remain optimistic that many plants will regrow with time. Gardening always reveals the cycles of life/death and calls us forth to patience.

🍂I read an article earlier today from UF/IFAS titled "Post-Hurricane Landscaping Tips: Wind Burn, Sea Spray, and Storm Surge". This was an informative article about how the wind burn combined with sea spray is what has turned gardens/landscapes from green to brown. If you had storm surge, this significantly decreases your plants likelihood of survival. The article stating "Even native coastal plants like dune sunflower, which can handle sea spray, cannot tolerate being submerged in saltwater."

💦The solution presented was watering plants to support the stressed plants. Running irrigation or hand watering seems especially important with no rain since Hurricane Milton and no rain forecasted in the coming days ahead.

🌿I'll make a follow-up post soon to highlight what plants did well and which struggled most in our gardens after these extreme weather events.

🌀Hurricane Milton (October 9th, 2024)

🚶This is what our neighborhood walks have looked like for the past few evenings.

🏡Homes (concrete block) completely destroyed. Stuff scattered, some of which was already stacked up from the previous storm surge two weeks prior from Hurricane Helene (September 26th, 2024).

💦All of these homes pictured are 4 blocks or less from our home. We are amongst the fortunate ones who were left unscathed. No water intrusion. No significant damage.

🌊The storm surge with Hurricane Milton was at the lower end of the predictions. In the days and hours leading up to the hurricane making landfall, estimates for surge were 10-15 ft.

😞We have been busy helping gut, trash, and clean up my parent's home in Grove City. They received water intrusion with both hurricanes. Hurricane Milton leaving them with 4 1/2 ft of water damage in their home. They are living with us now at Garden of the Arts.

💙Our hearts go out to all those impacted in our community.

🥑Avocado taste testing (part 2/2)

🔟English Jan with Angel Land Food Forest charity foraged and gathered 10 different avocado varieties for this event. This was the most avocado we've had in one evening!

📷We captured the insides of each avocado to document the color, pit size, etc. Keep in mind ripeness will not only impact the taste and texture, but also the appearance. Donnie was one of the ripest and Winter Mexican was one of the least ripened at this tasting.

😋Top four favorites from the group as a collective included Beta, Donnie, Miguel, and Simmonds. I made a guacamole for the event with the most ripened FL Hass and think this is a great avocado as well. The FL Hass we sampled plain was just slightly under. Ripeness really is key to a great tasting avocado.

✨The photos of the different varieties appear in alphabetical order:
Bernecker
Beta
Brogdon
Donnie
FL Hass
Marcus Pumpkin
Miguel
Purple Simmonds
Simmonds
Winter Mexican

🌳Marcus Pumpkin was foraged from English Jan's gardens and the Winter Mexican from Garden of the Arts.
