Eugene "Skip" L. Harwick (1931–1981) was a mid-20th-century American abstract modernist artist and beloved art educator based in Kansas. Known for his profound influence on regional Midwestern talent, his life and career spanned several key areas: [1, 2, 3]
Teaching & Mentorship: Harwick was a well-respected art professor at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in Hays, Kansas. He served as an influential mentor to many students, successfully encouraging them to pursue prestigious opportunities, including national art scholarships in New York City. [1, 2]
The Wichita Art Scene: In the early 1960s, Harwick lived in Wichita and emerged as a key figure in the post-WWII regional art movement. He was a co-founder of the Bottega Gallery, which was one of the first galleries in the city explicitly dedicated to the work of living, contemporary abstract artists. [1]
Artistic Style: His paintings—particularly those from the 1960s and 1970s—are deeply rooted in mid-century American abstraction and modernism. His work frequently blends abstract, lyrical concepts with dramatic color palettes. Today, his pieces (such as Dark Landscape) are featured in regional art exhibitions, such as those at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery. [1, 2,,3,4]
