Do you ever feel like you can see that place where things are ok, even beautiful. But the ground between where you are and that place is filled with obstacles, obscuring your vision. Day Two (yesterday) at tut beach….that’s my story.

Day One-Came to the beach to try to reset. Quarantine has dealt us some blows, and the sound of the sea is perfect. However, I would NOT recommend walking barefoot in the beach in 39 degree weather! Summer habits should be left at the door. Our toes are still throbbing. Tomorrow-socks and tennis shoes!

This moment-thank you America! My double exposure was accidental but felt like it caught the new reality. In a strange way, the pandemic meant that the celebration tonight was for all of us.

Day 2 - Covid Camping. Who would’ve thought an organic farm would be the place to camp? Had to run out in the middle of a game of charades to see this.

Camping on an organic farm! We’re found Covid friendly place because there’s tons of space and a single person use bathroom! Definitely a different view than in a state park.

“We see you! We love you!” Skip Bibbs led this chant outside the Durham Country Detention Facility on July 4th. This was the mid-point in an OAM protest that began at the Bull, stopped at the jail and proceeded back to the police station. When speaking earlier to Bibbs, he told me, "We shouldn’t be still fighting for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in 2020 when we were supposedly promised that at first in 1865. So we do a little bit more radical, and that’s why we’re camped out in front of the police station. They were hollering black lives matter but at the end of the day, they didn’t do anything to enrich the lives of black lives. They did exactly what we thought they would do, which is fund the police.” The poster promoting the event said: INDEPENDENCE DAY ISN’T A CELEBRATION UNTIL IT’S FREEDOM FOR ALL.

Dr. Martin Luther King, “Letter from a Birmingham Jail," April 16, 1963:

First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action”; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a “more convenient season.” Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.
