Dr. Kjar and Professor Kather returned with students to Elmira’s campus after 10 days studying the science and art of Tropical Ecology in Hawaii for Term III. Pictured here: watercolor by Jade Madill ā€˜27 and Joy Lynn ā€˜27 who collaboratively drew and painted the natural forms and phenomena found in the tropical ecosystem of the Big Island of Hawaii —capturing the Fire and Water inherant in the landscape as an erupting volcano above a lush green landscape.

Elmira College Student Winners for the Annual Portraying Mark Twain Contest

2026 "PORTRAYING MARK TWAIN" ART COMPETITION WINNERS

For the tenth year the Center for Mark Twain Studies has sponsored the "Portraying Mark Twain" art competition for all Elmira College students. Five final images were selected from twenty-five submissions that represented Mark Twain, his literature, or aspects of his life in Elmira and Quarry Farm. The winners are Jade Madill '27, Kate Forsythe '26, Amani Wandolo '26, Akira Ducot '28 and Madelynn Dziedzic '28. Their winning entries included four digital collages that altered or combined historic images of Twain with contemporary photos. The fifth entry creatively captured the well known "view from the porch" at Quarry Farm as a bold, graphic watercolor rendering. Look for their images on future promotional materials for CMTS.

Saturday/May 2, 2026, 11:30am
Hosted by Community Arts of Elmira's "Elmira Infinite Canvas" at the Lackawanna Rail Trail Wall, 801 Lake Street, Elmira, NY 14901.

The many muralists brightened this wall in "Elmira Tales" Phase I to uplift the community through the Community Arts of Elmira "Elmira Infinite Canvas" public art program, creating places from empty spaces, transforming "blight to brilliance" through the artistry of community storytelling:

Students in the fine arts class "To Be Human" visited Community Arts of Elmira today and were treated to a surprise visit by artist Ron Dixon who talked about creating the historical murals inside the building - one mural took four years to finish. Thank you to Lynne Rusinko for talking about the Clemens and the Pen exhibit (from artists working at Quarry Farm last summer) as well as arranging for us to visit City Hall to see Elmira College art professors' artwork on exhibit on the third floor.
