Arnot Art Museum The Arnot Art Museum is a landmark jewel of the art world in downtown Elmira, New York USA. Matthias H.

The Arnot Art Museum is a landmark jewel of the art world in downtown Elmira, New York. Housed in the 1833 neo-classical Arnot family mansion, it is one of the last remaining private art collections formed in the 19th century still exhibited in its original showcase. Arnot added a picture gallery in the 1890โ€™s and bequeathed his home and collection in 1910 to become the Arnot Art Museum, which ope

ned to the public three years later. A 1985 addition by Graham Gund Associates provides additional exhibition galleries. The Museum displays a Permanent Collection of 17th - to 19th โ€“century European paintings, 19th- through 21st- century American art and collections of Asian and Egyptian artifacts. Temporary exhibitions highlight various aspects of the collections and include works from museums around the world.

WEST WING, FIRST LEVEL GALLERIES

A commitment to representational art lies at the heart of both the Museum and the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts. Founded in 1976 in Old Lyme, Connecticut, by sculptor Elisabeth Gordon Chandler, the Academy was established to preserve and revitalize the traditions of figurative and representational art at a time when many art schools had moved away from life study and anatomical instruction. Chandler believed that artists develop their skills through direct observation, rigorous training, and mentorshipโ€”principles that remain central to the Academy today.

The works presented in Meaning in the Making honor these traditions while exploring a wide range of contemporary subjects and ideas. Varied in style and materials, the paintings, drawings, and sculptures share a common technical excellence and emotional accessibility. Created in bronze, marble, terracotta, plaster, cement, oil paints, charcoal, and other traditional media, these works demonstrate the enduring power of representational art to inspire reflection, discovery, and human connection.

We invite viewers to find meaning in the familiar, to look more closely, and to see the world anew through the enduring language of representational art.
