Join us this Saturday for an exhibition tour led by curator and Iraq War veteran, Aaron Hughes.

Aaron Hughes is an artist, curator, and anti-war veteran. Working through an interdisciplinary practice rooted in drawing and printmaking, Hughes works collaboratively to create meaning out of personal and collective trauma, transform systems of oppression, and seek liberation. He develops projects that utilize popular research strategies, experiment with forms of direct democracy, and operate in solidarity with the people most impacted by structural violence.

Along with Amber Zora and Mohamed Mehdi, he is the co-curator of 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙒𝙖𝙧, the 2026 Veteran Art Triennial.

𝗔𝗟𝗦𝗢 𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗪𝗢 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞𝗦!

𝙁𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙤𝙢 𝙁𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨, a solo exhibition by celebrated Chicago artist and activist Dorothy I. Burge, opens at the Chicago Cultural Center on October 2 as part of 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙒𝙖𝙧, the 2026 Veteran Art Triennial.

In a new series of quilts, Burge honors the radical legacy of Black veteran freedom fighters whose struggles extend beyond the battlefield. Through textile and portraiture, she traces a lineage of Black resistance connecting military service, abolition, civil rights, and antiwar organizing.

OPENING TODAY — Resisting the Long War: A Revolution of Values, the first show of the 2026 Veteran Art Triennial, is now open to the public at the Elmhurst Art Museum!

An official Veteran Art Triennial reception for A Revolution of Values will be held on November 5 during the 2026 Veteran Art Triennial Summit. More details coming soon!

In the meantime, Elmhurst Art Museum will host its own opening reception next Friday, September 18!

Please join us in welcoming another recipient of the 2026 Veteran Art Fellowship: Angela (Angel Skye)! Some of you might already know her from the BIPOC writing workshops at Warrior Writers!

Angela is an Army Reserve Combat Veteran from Philadelphia, now based in the DC metro area. Upon retiring, Angela began practicing yoga, writing poetry, and volunteering, which were instrumental in reducing stress. She is now a published writer, Holistic Lifestyle Coach, and Registered Yoga Teacher holding many specialized certifications. An avid volunteer for several organizations, Angela also earned the President Barack Obama Community Service Award. She facilitates monthly writing workshops for Veterans and recently founded Green Wall Yoga & Wellness, a traveling holistic lifestyle studio.
