Last week, something extraordinary happened in Elmhurst.

Veterans sat down with Nashville songwriters and shared stories that were often difficult to tell. Stories of service. Sacrifice. Resilience. Life after the uniform.

By evening, those stories had become songs.

Our community watched as veterans heard their experiences reflected back to them through music. Some listened. Some sang along. Some took the stage themselves. Tears were shed. Healing took place. And for many in that room, it was the most powerful part of the night.

From Staci Boyer performing "I Have a Voice" with Steve Dean, to the powerful stories shared by Donald Bozzi, Christine Seagrave, Marcus Simonetti, and others, the evening reminded us that every story deserves to be heard.

None of it would have been possible without the Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated Nashville songwriters who traveled to Elmhurst and brought their extraordinary talent and compassion to this experience.

Encore Center for Performing Arts was proud to produce this evening and grateful to Freedom Sings USA , the songwriters, the veterans who trusted us with their stories, and everyone who joined us for this unforgettable night.

The songs may have ended, but their impact will continue long after the final note.

Veteran Staci Boyer took the stage with Steve Dean and performed "I Have a Voice" and proved exactly what that title means.

That is what Freedom Sings USA makes possible. That is what healing looks like.

Tonight that line belonged to veteran Donald J. Bozzi. Nashville songwriter Bill DiLuigi knows what it means to serve — and tonight he used that understanding to give Donald's story its song. A room full of people in Elmhurst were honored to listen.

Watching a veteran hear their own story sung back to them, there are no words for what that feels like in a room full of people.
