Happy New Year! After a busy start to the year, we've been pretty quiet for the second half of 2021. That's because we bought a farm and moved out to the country! But we're working now on insulating and setting up our new workshop, and we'll be back to making art later in 2022. Thank you all for your continued support, and best wishes for all your endeavors in the new year!

It's done! Our belted kingfisher marquetry piece turned out beautifully!

The majestic kingfisher's beautiful blue crest and intricate wing feathers take center stage in this marquetry design. It incorporates maple, birch, Bolivian rosewood, dyed tatabu, white oak, sycamore, and koto into the body of the bird, with branches made of walnut burl, ash burl, camphor burl, and redwood burl, and an ambrosia maple background. The piece is completed by an African mahogany frame.

A rare visitor to the northwest, the rose breasted grosbeak's bright pink feathers shine in this marquetry design. Marquetry is the traditional craft of cutting paper-thin pieces of wood into small shapes to create a decorative picture. Using wood as an artistic medium comes with its own set of challenges. Dyes can be used to add splashes of color, and scorching pieces with hot sand can create a shadow effect. This marquetry piece uses all these techniques to depict a rose-breasted grosbeak perched on a branch.

Iconic Palouse Falls is the official waterfall of Washington State, and a magnificent remnant of the long ago glacial floods that carved out the landscape of eastern Washington. It is known as “Aput Aput”, meaning “Falling Water”, by the Palouse tribe. You can color this page in our PNW Hike coloring book!

If you're lucky while out in our local forests you might catch sight of a black bear. If she feels threatened by you, she might bluff charge to try to scare you off, but a real attack is very rare even if a cub is present. Find this coloring page in our PNW Wild coloring book.

I've been doing embroidery since I was a kid, so when I learned (fairly recently) that I could combine embroidery with woodworking, I knew it was something I wanted to try. Fast forward a few months and I'm so excited to introduce our first set of hand embroidered owls on wood, complete with handmade hardwood frames. They're up now on our website, just in time for mother's day! Find us at www.pnwcolor.com
