Courthouse Gallery Fine Art Representing contemporary Maine artists. Located in beautiful downtown Ellsworth. A large-scale sculpture park occupies the sweeping lawn out front.

Courthouse Gallery Fine Art represents contemporary Maine artists, including established artists whose artwork can be found in major collections nationally, emerging artists, and selected estates. This destination gallery offers over 4500 square feet of fine art handsomely displayed in Ellsworth’s historic courthouse and registry of deeds, two Greek Revival buildings built in 1832. Owners Michael

and Karin Wilkes opened the gallery in 2006 after renovating both buildings to their former grandeur.

GALLERY TALK: Wednesday, September 2 at 5pm
Join Priscilla Barter and Matt Barter for a conversation about life with husband and father, painter Philip Barter. They’ll share stories from the early years, when the family came together to build a cottage industry that helped launch Barter’s career—one that would go on to make him one of Maine’s most beloved painters.

The Gallery Talk will be held in conjunction with “My Maine: A Retrospective,” the first retrospective of Philip Barter’s work since he passed in 2024. The paintings cover the period from 1986 through 2023. Barter painted in oils until he developed cancer in early 2000, when he switched to acrylics.

When Ragna Bruno (1935–2026) painted, she went to place where only she could go. In this transcendental state, her marks flowed freely, without conscious direction, her expression pure and unmediated.

Yet through her painting, Bruno invited viewers into this deeply personal space, offering them a meditative journey of their own.

“I draw freely without preconceived thoughts, then there are no boundaries and anything can happen,” said Ragna Bruno in a 2019 interview with arts writer Daniel Kany Daniel Kany.

This quote inspired the title for RAGNA BRUNO: BOUNDLESS, a solo show celebrating the final twenty-three oil paintings Ragna Bruno (1935–2026) created before her passing in April 2026. Painted on Japanese paper in the peaceful solitude of her studio, these works invite viewers into a poetic, open-ended, meditative experience.
