Join us for a live feed this Saturday at 11am for an ARTISTS’ TALK with HEIDI DAUB and RICHARD KEEN, two artists with distinct approaches to abstraction who will explore what it means to GO BEYOND LANDSCAPE. The talk will be held at Courthouse Gallery and all are welcome.

Daub and Keen will talk about how the landscape becomes something else and the ways perceptions of the natural world can be translated, distilled, and transformed through the act of mark-making. They will reflect on process, color, and the influence of geometry and poetry in relation to the patterns and fractals found in nature and their paintings.

Their work is currently on view in A SHARED HORIZON, a two-person exhibition that explores unexpected connections between the work of Daub and Keen, two Maine artists whose styles are complementary, yet vastly different: geometric and bold on one hand, organic and softly layered on the other. A Shared Horizon is on view through October 17.

Beatrix Gates reading her poem “Bowling with Porcupines” at the Poetry Reading on September 16, as part of Rooted In Art, a “sense of place” exhibition celebrating our coastal region with visual art and poetry.

Her poem is about Brooksville, Maine, and was paired with an oil painting of Brooksville Harbor by Joseph Keiffer and a watercolor by Chenoweth Hall (1908–1999) of The Sands in Cape Split, Maine.

William Irvine is one of three artists highlighted in today’s Maine Sunday Telegram in a feature by Jorge Arango Jorge Arango about Maine artists still creating and exhibiting their art well into their nineties.

William Irvine (95), Alison Hildreth (92), and Josefina Auslender (92) were interviewed by Arango, who also talked about Richard Estes (94), and Alex Katz and Lois Dodd who are both 99.

Irvine’s advice to young artists: “Familiarize yourself with the great art of the past to the present. To understand and to feel that art is the medium through which we share our souls. Then you can embark on this amazing journey.”

“Afternoon, Bracy Cove” by Rick Fox was painted in Seal Cove on Mount Desert Island as part of Rooted In Art, a “sense of place” exhibition celebrating the coastal communities surrounding Courthouse Gallery.

We’re delighted to share the recent acquisition of “Resting Fishermen” by William Irvine. A work we’ve long admired for Irvine’s dynamic use of three alternating vertical panels to create a rhythmic composition. In this case, one that lulls the fishermen into a dreamlike nap.

ALISON RECTOR: ENTRY, ESCAPE opens with a reception on Wednesday, September 16, from 5–7pm. This solo exhibition highlights a new collection of Rector’s interiors like SWING FLING, a nostalgic scene of a bedroom in a traditional Maine camp. Note the portrait of van Gogh hanging on the wall.

Rector uses doors and windows to invite the viewer into rooms where shifting qualities of natural light capture fleeting moments that feel both familiar and mysterious. Ultimately, each painting offers a unique point of entry, discovery, and escape.

ROOTED IN ART opens with a Poetry Reading and Reception on Wednesday, September 16, from 5–7pm (Poetry Reading begins at 6pm). This special fall exhibition concludes a season of events marking the gallery’s 20th anniversary.

While our spring show, ELLSWORTH AS MUSE, honored the gallery’s hometown, ROOTED IN ART turns its attention to the broad network of coastal communities surrounding the gallery and the deep connection to place shared by the individuals who live here.
