What treasures can be hidden between the layers of a rock? 💎

Welcome back to INSIDE THE ROCK, a Gem Royale educational series exploring the remarkable minerals found in and around different host rocks.

Episode 02: SCHIST.

Formed when existing rocks undergo metamorphism under heat and pressure, schist is known for its distinctive layered texture, shimmering mica, and the beautiful crystals that can grow within it.

From deep-red garnets to brilliant blue kyanite, schist can reveal an extraordinary variety of minerals.

Garnet (Almandine) – Deep-red crystals embedded in metamorphic rock.
Kyanite – Striking blue blades associated with high-pressure metamorphism.
Staurolite – Famous for its unusual natural crystal twins.
Sillimanite – Slender crystals associated with higher-temperature metamorphism.
Andalusite – Distinctive prismatic crystals, sometimes displaying fascinating internal patterns.
Chloritoid – Dark-green minerals found in certain low- to medium-grade metamorphic rocks.
Muscovite – Silvery mica that gives many schists their beautiful shimmer.
Biotite – Dark mica that contributes to the rich texture and appearance of schist.

These minerals occur in different types of schist under different geological conditions. They do not necessarily form together in the same rock.

Each slide includes a simple mineral fact, notable sources, hardness, traditional symbolism, and a care tip.

👻 THE TOBY PEBBLETON CHRONICLES — EPISODE 15
THE GHOST WHO STOLE THE LIGHT ⚡💎

At 5:57 PM, one side of Lower Main Street went dark.

Shop windows. Streetlights. All out.

I checked the switches.

Toby checked the shadows.

“This is no ordinary outage, Moses…”

Out stepped Silas Blackwick: a crooked Victorian ghost with glowing green eyes, an ancient pocket watch, and a deep dislike of anyone enjoying themselves.

“At last! Lower Main Street is MINE! No bright shops. No cheerful customers!”

Then he spotted the Blue Door.

“Oh, no… Not THAT shop.”

Our lights were out too. But a few crystals were giving off a glow of their own… 👀

Apparently, Silas knew exactly what that meant.

“Those stones reveal my hiding places… and ruin my darkness!”

Toby picked up a piece of Citrine.

“Now, Silas… Shall we have a little light?”

“NO! NOT THE YELLOW ONE!”

A golden flash. A tangled coat. One wildly spinning pocket watch.

And Lower Main Street’s least pleasant ghost disappeared into a puff of smoke.

The electricity returned.

I looked at Toby.

“You handled that, didn’t you?”

He straightened his patched hat.

“There’s always a little light behind this door.”

Somewhere beneath the cobblestones, a furious voice grumbled:

“I hate that shop. I hate those stones. And I ABSOLUTELY HATE THAT BLUE DOOR!”

Toby looked rather pleased with himself.

He hadn’t noticed who was standing behind him.

Or what she was holding. 🍳🤭

I went to the Port of Baltimore to collect our shipment of handmade landscape carvings.

I came back to find Toby had recruited a ghost pirate crew… and turned Gem Royale into a treasure hunt. 😂

👻 THE TOBY PEBBLETON CHRONICLES — EPISODE 13
Ten Stones. One Unexpected Trade.

For once, I picked out ten little stones for myself.

Not for a customer.
Not for a display.

For ME.

I put them in a small bag beside the cash drawer, planning to take them home the next day.

Apparently, Toby had other plans. 😅

By morning, the bag was gone.

In its place: three iron specimens and a note.

“A fair trade, Moses.
— Toby”

Now… I’ll admit something.

The pieces he left were interesting. This might actually have been a pretty good trade.

But there was one small problem:

Nobody had asked ME.

When Toby returned, I explained that leaving something valuable doesn’t automatically make it a sale.

You ask.
We discuss.
We both agree.

Even if one of us happens to have been dead for more than 250 years.

And to his credit, Toby stopped joking.

“You’re right, Moses. I should have asked. I’m sorry.”

He offered to return my stones.

This time, I chose to accept the trade.

Next time, we agree FIRST. 🤝

Then we came up with a better arrangement:

TOBY’S TREASURE BOX. 👻💎

A special place where he can leave pieces he wants to sell or trade, along with a note. I’ll examine them, work out a price, and we’ll agree before anything changes hands.

If something on my shelves catches his eye?

He leaves a reservation request.

Apparently, our oldest customer is finally learning how shopping works. 😂

But just when I thought we’d settled everything…

Toby said something that stayed with me.

“Two hundred and fifty years in one town, Moses.
Even a ghost gets homesick.”

Then he showed me photos of the handmade landscape carvings currently on their way to Gem Royale.

My order.
Inside a carton.
Inside a shipping container.
On a ship.

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN.

And then…

A selfie.

Toby. On the ship. 👀🌊

“How did you get THERE?!”

His answer?

“Your order looks lovely, by the way.”

Of course.

A perfectly normal response to a completely impossible situation.

And that little bag in his pocket…

I’m starting to think those ten stones caught his attention for a reason.
