As a q***r chicana poet, essayist, and cultural critic, Gloria Anzaldua constantly interrogated the binaries in society. Her essay "How to Tame a Wild Tongue" is a much-anthologized, groundbreaking piece of writing on how violence against language begets a language against human beings, and an argument for allowing people their nuances of language and culture.

“Love takes off the masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within." James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time

James Baldwin (August 2, 1924-December 1, 1987) was one of the most influential American writers of the the 20th century, as well as an activist who participated in the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965. He was an influential poet, playwright, novelist, and essayist who was also a masterful public speaker, particularly on matters of race and human dignity and equality. While very private about his personal life, he was open about his homosexuality at a time when the topic was very taboo. In books like Giovanni's Room, he wrote about themes of human sexuality and identity. His book Go Tell it On the Mountain remains one of the most influential books in the English language.

Baldwin grew up in Harlem, but spent his later years in the south of France, often traveling around the world. He was a public intellectual, but also wrote beautifully about love. In a 2024. interview with NPR, Baldwin's friend Eleanor Traylor says “He didn't talk of a utopia, a perfect world [. . ] He just said, if you love, you will create the kind of world you wish to live in.”
