The Elkhart County Symphony returns to The Lerner Theatre on Nov. 15 for Duel Vi2lity—and with it comes your final opportunity to purchase Season Tickets for our four remaining Season 79 concerts!

🎻 Duel Vi2lity features Khari R. Joyner, one of the most exciting young cellists of his generation. Hailed by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as “one of the most promising young cellists in the country,” Khari brings extraordinary artistry and virtuosity to Elkhart County for a performance you won't want to miss.

Season Tickets includes Duel Vi2lity, followed by the monumental power of Verdi Requiem with Camerata Singers and Goshen College Choirs at Sauder Concert Hall on Feb. 14, 2027; the blockbuster movie music of Cinematic Symphony on March 14, 2027; and our cosmic Planetary Finale on May 16, 2027, featuring innovative percussion ensemble pax duo and Holst’s The Planets!

The Symphony's Season 79 opens with an afternoon celebrating the rich musical traditions of Spain and Latin America, featuring works by Moncayo, Piazzolla, de Falla, and Márquez.

From the vibrant rhythms of Huapango and Danzón No. 2 to the intimate beauty of Piazzolla’s Oblivion, this outdoor concert celebrates both the musical traditions of Spain and Latin America, and the enduring cultural impact Hispanic communities have had on Elkhart County for generations.

The concert opens with Gala Flagello’s energetic Vitality for Orchestra, followed by Saint-Saëns’ virtuosic Cello Concerto No. 2, performed by acclaimed young cellist Khari Joyner. The evening culminates with Brahms’ sweeping Symphony No. 2 in D Major, a beloved work often known as his “Pastoral” Symphony.

From a rising contemporary composer to an extraordinary young soloist and one of the great symphonic masterpieces, Duel Vi2lity brings tradition and the next generation of classical voices together for an unforgettable evening.

Recently, Longtime Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra Timpanist Dave Swihart announced his retirement from the Symphony. Dave began playing with the Symphony in 1979! Dave has long been a pillar in the musical community in Elkhart as a past conductor and percussionist in the Elkhart Municipal Band.

We wish to thank Dave for his remarkable legacy of service to the Symphony, and we wish him the very best in his next chapter.

🎶 EVERY YOUNG MUSICIAN STARTS SOMEWHERE!

Maybe it begins with the first time a child picks up an instrument. A lesson. A school ensemble. A teacher who sees potential. And, with time, practice, and encouragement, perhaps even the opportunity to take center stage with a symphony orchestra.

Creating those opportunities for young musicians is an important part of the Elkhart County Symphony’s commitment to music education—and this year, a longtime tradition returns. The Elkhart County Symphony Youth Concerto Competition is back after more than a decade, and registration is NOW open!

🎼 Auditions: Saturday, Jan. 9, 2027 | 1 p.m.
📍 Concord High School

The competition is open to Elkhart County students in grades 9–12 performing on piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, or percussion. The Grand Prize winner will receive $200—and the extraordinary opportunity to perform as a featured soloist with the Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra during Cinematic Symphony, March 14 at The Lerner Theatre. Second- and third-place winners will receive $100 and $50.

“This competition isn’t simply about selecting one outstanding soloist—it’s about encouraging all the young musicians in our area to dream bigger, work harder, and discover what’s possible,” said Executive Director Glenn Northern, who spent 36 years as an educator, including 14 years as Director of Bands at Penn High School.

🎻 A RISING STAR. A VIRTUOSIC CELLO CONCERTO. AN UNFORGETTABLE AFTERNOON OF MUSIC!

One of classical music’s most exciting rising artists is coming to Elkhart!

Internationally acclaimed cellist Khari R. Joyner takes center stage with the Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra for Duel Vi2lity, Nov. 15 at The Lerner Theatre in downtown Elkhart.

Joyner—whose remarkable career has already included performing at the White House for President Barack Obama—will tackle Saint-Saëns’ rarely performed Cello Concerto No. 2, a dazzling, technically demanding work that Joyner himself introduced to our Conn Selmer-Endowed Music Director Dr. Soo Han.

And that’s only part of the afternoon.

The concert launches with Gala Flagello’s Vitality for Orchestra, an energetic contemporary work bursting with momentum, before Joyner brings his virtuosity to Saint-Saëns. Then, the full power of the Symphony takes over with Brahms’ sweeping Symphony No. 2, a work beloved for its warmth, grandeur, and soaring melodies.

Duel Vi2lity is the next chapter of our 2026-27 season, and Khari Joyner leads an extraordinary roster of artists still to come this season, including the Camerata Singers and Goshen College Choirs at Verdi Requiem, acclaimed conductor Michael Stern and our Youth Concerto Competition Winner at Cinematic Symphony, and innovative percussion ensemble pax duo at our Planetary Finale.

But first, the spotlight belongs to Khari on Nov. 15!
