The Artists’ Collective in Elk will present Sondra Sula’s solo show
entitled “FREE” during the month of August 2026. Her “Little
Souls” are small, framed assemblages using minerals, fossils, jewelry
and other found objects.

“Free” explores Sula’s theme for the year. “Although I am
incredibly busy, I feel a sense of freedom I have not felt for many
years,” the artist states. “I did not want to put any limits on the
pieces I was making for this show and therefore it is an eclectic
mix.”

Sula has been represented/shown by galleries in Chicago, Santa Fe,
Michigan and on the northern California coast from San Francisco to Fort
Bragg.

A gallery opening will take place on “Second Saturday,” August 8th
from 1 to 3 pm.

The Artists’ Collective Gallery is located at 6031 S. Hwy 1, in
Greater Downtown Elk. It is open daily from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm.

"Resting On My Laurels", Sophia Sutherland's show of "overtly whimsical and covertly philosophical" Sculptures, Drawings and Paintings, opens at the Artists Collective in Elk (ACE) on May 1st and continues through May 30th.There will be an opening reception on May 9th from 1-3 pm. It has a layered surface of gauze, gesso and multi colored markings that has given it a feeling of mystery.

There will also be a group of drawings and paintings inspired, in part, by many teachers and artists throughout the centuries.

Sutherland, 85, has long done drawing and painting, but began as a potter some years ago and now creates sculptural works in clay and bronze when she is not teaching her cat, Bijou, more yoga stretches.

Jane Castner Mothersill is the featured artist of the month in April at The Artists' Collective in Elk. She is a painter of "inspired realism" – interpretations and visual expression emanating from her interactions with nature, people, cultures and ideas. While unequivocally representational, she works to convey broader messages in its ex*****on - seeking to elicit emotional and intellectual responses from the viewer. Concepts such as truth, beauty and conflict, as well as temporal and cultural elements, underpin her work – which encompasses oil, pastel, charcoal and mixed media paintings as well as terra cotta and bronze sculpture.

She says: "My landscape paintings are completed substantially on site – where I can feel the intimacy of nature and the confluence of elements that impact one's perception of their surroundings. My still lives, which are undertaken primarily in my studio, are often symbolic in conveying a sense of beauty that lies in the world within – occasionally incorporating diverse and culturally specific elements in telling their stories. My figurative works tend to be emotional, conveying feelings of or toward my subject."

Jane graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in humanities and international affairs, then moved to the Philippines where she learned Chinese brush painting. Upon returning to the US, she studied painting, drawing and sculpture full time at the Art Students League of New York and was awarded a full merit scholarship to attend the Graduate School of Figurative Art at the New York Academy - where she received an MFA in studio art in 1990. Her education has also included studying with a wide range of practicing artists in the US, France and in Asia. She lived abroad in Tokyo and Hong Kong for 16 years and maintained a home and studio in the Loire Valley in France for 33 years.

She currently reside full time at The Sea Ranch, CA where her studio is located, but continues to spend extensive time traveling and painting in locations around the world.

The show will run from April 10th through Apr. 30th, with a reception for the artist on 2nd Saturday, April 11th, in the afternoon from 1 to 3 pm. The gallery is located at 6031 S. Hwy. 1, in Greater Downtown Elk, Calif, between the post office and the Maritime Cafe. The gallery is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.

For March, The Artists’ Collective in Elk presents a new body of work
by Bryn Elizan Harris featuring small-format paintings with an outsized
visual impact, entitled “Dancing Light: Small in Scale. Bold in
Presence.” Using textured acrylic and layered metal leaf, Harris
explores light, atmosphere, and horizon through abstracted landscapes
inspired by ocean, cloud, forest, and floral forms. Reflective metals
emerge beneath painted surfaces, creating depth, contrast, and shifting
luminosity that rewards close viewing.

This series marks a material expansion for the artist, moving beyond
traditional gold leaf to explore how color, texture, and metallic
surfaces interact. Intimate in scale yet confident in presence, the
works function as both image and object—quietly powerful and
responsive to light.

Harris will also be teaching a painting workshop that morning at the
gallery.

The show will run from March 1st to the 31st with a reception for the
artist on 2nd Sat., March 14th, from 1 to 3 pm. The Artists’
Collective is located at 6031 S. Hwy 1, in Elk.

The Artists' Collective at Elk presents a double exhibition for the month of February, of ceramic figurative sculpture by Sophia Sutherland, and the digital artwork of our newest artist, Kalahan Stoker.

Sophia has been an artist and dancer since she was a child. "I have noticed that we are all artists," she says. "It was my good fortune to have been encouraged to express my creative spirit as I grew up. I drew, painted and played in clay as a child. "The medium of clay moves me into a dialog between my hands and the clay, allowing me to enter into another dimension that I and my clay tribe call 'the zone'. A delicious place. A place to re-create the world and myself.

Sophia's show is entitled Adornments/A Clowder of Cats. The show will feature new "hot out of the kiln" works of art. Each of the sculptures has an adornment added. "My works are overtly whimsical and covertly philosophical. I move between the 2nd, 3rd, and finally the 4th dimension. This dimension is where I can explore with my viewers the lost stage with creativity. I am grateful for this gift of when I am connected to my 'art spirit'."

Kalahan Stoker is a digital illustrator based on the Mendocino coast, where the redwoods and the ocean offer a quiet space for healing. After a period of learning how to navigate life with endometriosis and psoriatic arthritis, she has found the strength and inspiration to return to her art. Much of this new energy comes from time spent with her partner outdoors where they forage for wild mushrooms and hike the coastal trails with their three dogs.

Her work explores the playful side of nature and food, specifically through her charming digital drawings of avocado characters engaging in everyday life. Even though she is personally allergic to avocados and several other foods, she finds joy in giving them their own vibrant personalities. These illustrations are a lighthearted reflection of her life on the coast and the simple happiness of being back at her digital canvas.

The show will run from Feb. 1st through Feb. 28th. There will be a reception for the artist on the first Sat. in February, Feb. 7th, from 1 to 3 pm. The Artists' Collective at Elk is located at 6031 S. Hwy. 1, in Greater Downtown Elk, between the post office and the Maritime Cafe. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (707) 877-1128.
