The chicks we bought last May from Freedom Ranger Hatchery have started laying olive, chocolate brown and blue eggs. Look for these gorgeous egg colors on your next egg run at Craigardan. Our birds are fed organic grain, compost scraps and all the insects they can find while moving around our pastures. They help fertilize our land which grows grass for our sheep and vegetables for our artists, staff and community.

We love getting to see our alumni out and about in the Adirondacks! This region has such a vibrant creative community and it’s always exciting to see familiar faces pop up. This summer we got to see Chelsea Dodds (’25) read at Snowfort Books in Westport and support Shawndel Fraser (’24, ’25) who had work in Divergent Spectrums IV at Keene Arts.

You can see more of Shawndel’s work, Hands That Nurture: Perceptions of Masculine Devotion, at SUNY Plattsburgh from October 20th-December 4th. And we’re excited to see another alum Lu Chekowsky (’24, ’25, ’26) in conversation with Amy Robinson at Snowfort on October 18th.

Alumni, please let us know when you’re in the neighborhood! We love to see what you’ve been working on.

It’s officially been fall for a couple weeks now, and the farm store is stocked with lots of local seasonal produce including winter squash, apples, and pears. Not sure where to start? Butternut squash (Juniper Hill Farm, slide 2) is perfect for deep roasting or making puréed soups. Delicata squash (Wild Work Farm, slide 3)are a little softer and work well for a variety or preparations including grilling. Bartlett pears (Forrence Orchards, slide 4) are popular as a snack or for canning and preserving. Macintosh apples (Forrence Orchards, slide 5) are great for snacking or cooking with, but Gala apples (Forrence Orchards, slide 6) are better for baking. The outdoor growing season may be coming to a close, but there’s still lots of local produce to enjoy!

Apple season. Craigardan inherited an old c***r orchard on the property that reappeared after clearing our land for pasture. The trees were probably planted in the 1800s when the land was cleared the first time and folks wanted c***r to drink.
Our tree by our store entrance is also an apple tree that we prune regularly when we host our annual tree pruning workshop for the community at the start of spring. It is now bearing apples that make delicious apple pies.
The sheep also enjoy an apple treat and shade from the trees.

Did you know that we have yarn made from our very own sheep? Our friendly flock of Tunis sheep have a medium-fine wool, which has been processed into 180 yd (2 oz) skeins of DK weight yarn great for knitting and crocheting. If this sounds like the perfect touch for your next project, you can buy a skein (or two or five) at our farm store or at Young’s Studio & Gallery in Jay. Happy crafting!

We are mourning the loss of a great writer and our dear friend, Jennifer Steil. Award-winning author, “ovarian cancer wrangler,” mother and wife, Craigardan alumna, and incredible human and artist. We interviewed Jennifer for the Gardan Journal when “Exile Music” came out, and we had the honor of supporting her writing with a fellowship in 2024 for her third residency at Craigardan. She touched all her knew her here with her warmth, wisdom, and kindness.

Our kale and sheep both enjoy the cooler weather. The farm has just started feeding the ewes grain to ensure they have all their minerals and vitamins to be in excellent shape as we start our breeding season next month with a goal of March lambs. The flock also love some treats from the garden. Stop in and find yourself some today, too! You can spy the sheep as they graze the farm store pasture. We sell their yarn in store. farm
