It’s the new year and time for membership renewals. For those of you that might be new or not know, BCHET is a chapter of a much larger organization. Back Country Horsemen of America formed in 1973 in Flathead Valley in Montana by four men. Who would have thought there would have been restrictions on stock use in Montana of all places?!?! As a group they began participating by attending meetings and getting involved in land use management and planning. Over the last 53 years the organization has grown into a national organization with the following mission:

Back Country Horsemen of America is a 501(C) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to the following mission.

*To perpetuate the commonsense use and enjoyment of horses in America’s back country and wilderness.
*To work to ensure that public lands remain open to recreational stock use.
*To assist the various government and private agencies in their maintenance and management of said resource.
*To educate, encourage and solicit active participation in the wise use of the back country resource by horsemen and the general public commensurate with our heritage.
*To foster and encourage the formation of new state Back Country Horsemen’s organizations.

Our grassroots members help carry forward our organization’s mission and values throughout the United States and Canada working closely with trail partners and local land management agencies to clear and maintain trails.

BCHA members volunteer their time and stock and traveling over 1.1 million miles to locations to do volunteer work.

If you enjoy riding local trails I encourage you to join BCHET. If you’re not in our area then please join and support your local chapter. There’s a good chance the trail you are exploring was built and maintained on the backs of a Back Country Horsemen chapter.

Your membership doesn’t require you to spend hours in the woods with a chainsaw strapped to you or your horse. Your membership does give a voice to the desire (and need) to use our public lands. The greater the numbers the louder our voice. Every membership counts when an issue is brought to our legislative bodies. They see 100 members and might give some consideration but when you have an organization that holds thousands of memberships nationally, it’s going to get their attention. Attempts to close and decommission trails are happening across the country. It’s happening in TN. While we locally aren’t facing any closures we are not immune to the possibility.

Be a voice for BCHA. Join a local chapter. Volunteer if you’re available. Support local trail maintenance and management and support trail enthusiasts nationwide with that membership. We would love to have you🤠
