🪷✨ A HIDDEN GEM AT THE HISTORIC POOL-LUMSDEN-PETERS HOUSE ✨🪷

Tucked away beside the house is this beautiful old brick-lined ornamental pond, complete with established water lilies and a charming fountain. 🌿⛲

As we continue uncovering and restoring different parts of The Historic Pool-Lumsden-Peters House, we’re discovering little treasures that make us wonder about the stories this property could tell.

The age and construction of this pond have us especially curious. The old brickwork, long rectangular design, mature water lilies, and decorative fountain suggest this wasn’t simply a backyard addition. It may have once been an important part of the home’s gardens and landscape.

And now we’re dreaming about bringing it back to life! 💭

Imagine the fountain flowing again, the pond cleaned and restored, water lilies blooming, beautiful landscaping surrounding it, and soft lighting reflecting across the water in the evenings. ✨🌙

It could become an absolutely beautiful setting for weddings, photographs, garden parties, intimate gatherings, and special events at the house.

But before we begin, we’d love to learn more about its history.

Check out these massive, double pocket doors connecting the double parlors inside the historic Pool-Lumsden-Peters House in Elizabeth City, North Carolina! Built in 1840, this Greek Revival home features trim and casing detail heavily inspired by pattern books of the era, like Asher Benjamin’s The Practical House Carpenter.
Take a look at the classic 8-panel configuration and the intricate head casing with its raised central tablet motif—a design feature that mirrors the home's grand front entrance!

In the 1800s, pocket doors like these were as functional as they were beautiful—allowing homeowners to open up the grand parlors for entertaining or seal them off to keep heat in during the cooler months!

Calling All Arborists & Tree Experts! 🌳

We need your help.

This magnificent old tree has stood watch over the backyard of the Historic Pool-Lumsden-Peters House for generations. It has likely witnessed well over a century of Elizabeth City’s history, providing shade, beauty, and a living connection to the past.

Recently, we discovered significant damage and decay at the base of the trunk. While the canopy still appears healthy, we’re deeply concerned about the long-term health and structural stability of this incredible tree.

Arborists, tree preservation specialists, and anyone with experience caring for historic trees… please chime in!

🍃 Is this tree something that can be saved?
🍃 What treatment or stabilization options should we explore?
🍃 Are there preservation techniques that could help extend its life safely?

Our goal is to preserve this beautiful piece of living history if at all possible. We know every old tree has a story, and we’d love for this one to continue telling its story for many more years.

Who's ready for a good old-fashioned block party?!

A few weeks ago, we asked for your thoughts about hosting an event on the lawn while renovations continue. One of you commented, "Have a block party and everyone bring a dish."
We loved the idea so, we're making it happen with a few fun additions!

Join us for our First Friday Historic Block Party on Friday, August 7th, from 4:00–8:00 PM at 204 S. Road St., Elizabeth City.
Bring your favorite dish to share if you'd like or simply come enjoy the evening! We'll have:

🤠 Line dancing
🍧 Summer treats
🎉 Lawn games and activities for all ages
✨ Local vendors (vendors, send us a message if you're interested!)

Upstairs, some of the wallpaper was damaged and different areas of the paint was beginning to chip. Other areas had actually held up pretty well over the years. We've touched up what needed immediate attention, but I'm still a little conflicted on what to do next.

Do we preserve what's left of the wallpaper and some of the green color? Or do we give it a complete refresh like we've done in areas downstairs? Hmm...
