Been thinking about old friends recently. So glad to have become acquainted with the late Helen and Hugh Glasson through our involvement with McHaffey Opera House. They were a generation older, so it was fun to listen to their Eldon experiences from a different era than mine. In September, 2012, Hugh shared some childhood memories. We'll share those memories with you.
"I remember when John Wind retired from the cafe' (he sold out to Wh**ey Jones). He lived in the house on West Walnut where the little stone wall is (that house is now gone). He planted the yard in bent grass and would sit out in the yard for hours on his a** picking weeds out of the grass. He was real thin and his wife was real big. The house next to his was Charley Hunter's and everyone was scared to death of Charley. He was mean. He didn't want anyone in his yard and he'd holler at the kids if they cut the corner a little and walk through his yard. He'd sit outside with a rifle to shoot the sparrows that tried to get in his swallow house. Madeline, his daughter, had already graduated from college when I was a kid but she didn't do squat--in fact, you hardly ever saw her. It was in the depth of the depression. Dad was on the school board and they were desperate for teachers so he went and asked if she would take a teaching job. She was so backward that she stood behind her dad the whole time he was there. But she took the job and became a beloved teacher. Mrs. Hunter was a sister to the Russell's and she went after a Rodabaugh guy with a broom when he stepped off the walk into their yard when the walkway was flooded."
