Singers and students: I teach bel canto singing, and bel canto is an amazing lifelong discipline which Opera singers and classical concert singers adhere to.

Of course, I often teach bel canto to singers who wish to sing Broadway, pop, jazz or rock. Why? Because once you have mastered bel canto, if such a thing is even possible, you can do any of those other genres safely and easily! Learning bel canto may present the appearance of more work (and money) than a singer feels like committing to. I hear, “I want to sing Broadway, etc. so I don’t need all that.” or “this other teacher is cheaper” yes. Cheaper. But in the short or the long run?

Most of my students burst through the audition process and typically receive scholarship.. sometimes full rides. That’s a pretty big return on your investment.

The truth of that matter, however, as all well trained singers have learned is that it only seems like a shortcut to ignore excellent singing technique and breath early on. The shortcut catches up to you later, when you need to do something that you are unable to do.

And that is why I don’t advise taking voice lessons with a singer who has not studied extensive classical technique. These who sometimes work in a storefront guitar store or comes to your house for next to nothing money. Not because they aren’t fabulous and amazing at what they do, but because it is actually more economical to prevent bad habits than to grow them then have to pay to fix them later, after you have missed important opportunities like scholarship money.

Do yourself a favor. Attend to the technique first, and translate that to a style of singing later. You’re welcome. 🤪
