This concept is one that will attest to our relation-ship between animals and the audience who passes by or visits the Los Angeles Animal Shelter. The art work installed will offer a unique beacon to educate, cultivate and enrich the lives of our animal caregiver .
Drawing from my culture and previous art investigations I have learned that the adoration and reverenceof the Xoloitzcuintle was common practice. This specific breed of dog has evolved in what is known in Mexico and Peruvian high country regions. Not of the most adorable and cuddly but yet a symbolic mysterious mythical companion with fitting qualities for centuries. The reverence to this species and relationship are parallel to the present cultivating unconditional love, loyalty.
In my experience I’ve had animals throughout my life, I’ve learned of many underlying truths about animals, their feeling, willingness to protect us, their expressions, detecting danger, natural instinct to rescue, guiding us in time of need. Qualities we aspire too.
I am one who believes in the cultural revival of native traditions and mythology. As a native who admires mythological stories told by ancestral voices. This was the myth function of the Xoloitzcuintle who is a transitional guide to our deceased in there to journey into the ever after. The balsa/canoe in my previous artworkis a symbolic metaphor as a bridge connecting different world cultures which teach us by remaining relics and artifacts.
